To Sup with the Devil

Pub landlord Ray Gurney seemingly falls down the stairs and dies. The police surgeon thinks that it was murder as Gurney was hit on the head.
Police informant Gary Tregenna points the finger of suspicion towards Sam Venning. He is married to Gurney's ex wife Lisa who lent Gurney some money.
It looks like an open and shut case regarding Venning. However a confession about Treganna's past behaviour from a young woman to Wycliffe raises doubts about him.
Unfortunately it is DI Lane who is in peril. She thought that Treganna might open up to her, but not in the way she thought.
The fourth series is really putting DI Lane through the wringer. Maybe they want to develop the character as someone who makes mistakes and nearly pays a heavy price.
This episode was well directed by veteran Graeme Harper. There are some stunning shots of the Cornish landscape.
However I could not help thinking that this was disguising a weak story.
