The Virginian in Beauville, Texas is remitting $10,000 from a horse sale back to Shiloh at an express office when the office is robbed. Having a receipt for his money, he is ultimately allowed to leave. During the return trip he meets Linda Valence on the stage coach with whom he develops a close relationship. With time her story to him changes as she reveals the truth about her background. Ultimately, Linda tells him she has become involved in something that scares her and asks The Virginian for advice. At Beauville she was asked to carry a package to another town where she is to give it to someone else who contacts her for a fee. She looked in the package which is $50,000 in cash. The Virginian gives her three options including contacting the law but when the package turns up missing, she is scared. A second male stage passenger Whitey Luder tries to intimidate The Virginian but with no success as The Virginian makes friends with the crusty stage driver. The Virginian finds himself involved in a deadly mystery clouded by Linda's changing story.
