Ralph : [Ralph enters the sheriff's office and addresses Melinda Curry]  Mr. Gilman said he'd be right here, Miss.

Melinda Curry : Thank you. He's the sheriff?

    Melinda Curry : I'm sorry.

Ralph : Well, no need to be. He was eighty-two. Mr. Gilman came down from Austin to help out till we could have another election. The way folks feel around here right now, they don't wanna get anybody else.

Ralph : This lady came to see you, Mr. Gilman.

Hoby Gilman : Is there anything I can do for you?

Melinda Curry : I'd like you to help me find my mother.

Hoby Gilman : She ever been in Porter?

Melinda Curry : The last letter I got from her was mailed from here.

Hoby Gilman : Uh huh. So, uh, when did you, uh, see her last?

Melinda Curry : I've never seen her.

    [Hoby appears stunned]

    Melinda Curry : I'm blind.
