- Johnny and Ed continue their debate about a tree falling in the forest. Bob Hope (Stand Up and Cheer for the National Football League's Sixtieth Year (1981)); Susan Sarandon (Who Am I This Time? - During the monologue, Doc notes that his son is getting married over the weekend. There is no comedy segment; Johnny and Ed continue their discussion from the previous night's show about whether a tree falling makes a sound if no one hears it, and Johnny reads a scientist's letter laying out both points of view. Ricky Schroder is introduced, and immediately takes Ed's side that it does make a sound; he also gives Johnny a Lung Association T-shirt for clean air, and Johnny comments that he'll forgo smoking tonight. Schroder talks about his visit to the White House, meeting Queen Elizabeth and Pope John Paul II; Johnny expresses mock jealousy and resentment. Schroder also discusses how he likes playing baseball. Bob Hope promotes his upcoming special with a football theme. He talks about how he once had an ownership interest in the Rams. Outtakes from the special are shown. Hope also comments on the royal wedding, and talks about a prior show he did for Budweiser with Ed, and an upcoming performance at Villanova University. Susan Sarandon recalls growing up in New Jersey, and talks about actors being childlike; she notes that child actors often seem more grown-up. She says that her new short hairstyle has given her something of an identity crisis, and talks about filming her upcoming movie in Greece.—lenab9011
