Move over Dixon of Dock Green, you should have been pensioned off years ago. In fact your character had died years before the show started.
Producer Philip Hinchcliffe had upset Mary Whitehouse with his violent Gothic take on Doctor Who. Director David Wickes has just finished the movie version of The Sweeney.
Target was the BBC's answer to Regan and Carter. Only even more grittier and violent. So much so it has never been repeated since the 1970s. Mary Whitehouse went on a warpath over this show.
The first episode has DS Steve Hackett (Patrick Mower) on a stakeout after receiving a tip off from his snout on something big arriving on a ship.
The only thing Hackett finds is the snout laying dead in his car, his throat cut.
Hackett and his team want revenge. It seems something is going down in this ship. Is it silver, foreign currency or something else?
There is a fake German, a dodgy South African, a ship's bursar who could be lying and a few menacing henchmen.
It is grimy with the 1970s Dockland scenes. A big car chase at the end. Mower is in his element as he played a tough policeman in Special Branch and also appeared in Callan.
This could easily had been an ITV show and Wickes would go on to direct some episodes of The Professional. A good opener.
