Good Tales from the Darkside episode.

Warning: Spoilers
Tales from the Darkside: The Casavin Curse starts one morning as Lieutenant Wright (John Brandon) & psychiatrist Dr. Jeffrey Webster (Scott Lincoln) are called to a murder scene, Tyler Harrington the lover of the millionaire heiress Gina Casavin (Catherine Parks) has been brutally strangled & stabbed. Gina admits to committing the crime but not remembering it saying it's because of an ancient family curse, her cousin Nicholas (Jospeh Cortese) agrees but is the cops prime suspect as they don't believe Gina could have done it. After some incriminating evidence comes to light Nicholas is taken in & Webster is left alone with Gina at which point he discovers the truth...

Episode 24 from season 2 this Tales from the Darkside story originally aired in the US during July 1986 & brought the second season to a close, directed by Frank de Palma one has to say The Casavin Curse is a neatly effective horror themed story about a sinister gypsy curse. The script by Edithe Swensen certainly finishes the season on a high note, the basic story revolving around a curse isn't the most original this show has ever put on screen but it does work & makes sense, it's horror themed rather than light hearted fantasy & there's a nicely dark twist ending at the end (Then again having said that where else would the twist ending come? The start?). At twenty minutes it's short & manages to tell a decent story with the minimum of fuss & flesh out the character's to a decent degree in such a scant duration.

To this point I would probably say that The Casavin Curse is maybe the most gory & violent Tales from the Darkside episode, there's a blood splattered murder scene with the body complete with huge knife wounds clearly seen in several shots, someones neck is broken on screen & someone is stabbed in the stomach with a knife with a fair amount of blood. The acting is good from a largely unknown cast.

The Casavin Curse is one of the best episode from the second season & feels a lot more like an average Tales from the Crypt (1989 - 1996) episode which is no bad thing. A good end to a mixed second season which has ranged from awful to average to great.

The Gypsy Curse
claudio_carvalho26 April 2022
When the lover of the beautiful and wealthy Gina Casavin is found dead on her bed strangled and stabbed, Police Lieutenant Wright and the psychiatrist Dr. Jeffrey Webster attend the call and analyze the crime scene. Gina blames an ancient gypsy course in her family for the death of her lover, but her cousin Nicholas becomes the prime suspect based on information provided by the maid Miranda Dean. Dr. Webster meets Gina several times to convince her that the curse does not exist, and they fall in love with each other. But soon Dr. Webster learns the secret of the gipsy curse.

"The Casavin Curse" is the last episode of the Second Season of "Tales from the Darkside" that closes with golden key. The episode is great, with the gorgeous Catherine Parks in the role of a wealthy woman that believes that she is cursed and her lovers should die. The conclusion is great. My vote is seven.

Cursed to death
kapelusznik1814 March 2016
Warning: Spoilers
***SPOILERS*** Extremely violent as well as confusing TFTDS episode involving the so-called "Casavin Curse" that started some 100 years ago when an accused witch was killed by the Casavin's of that time. As we see at the start of the episode multi millionaire Tyler Harrington, played by what looked like a life like mannequin, is found dead hacked to death in bed with his girlfriend Gina Casavin taking the blame for his murder. Even though Gina doesn't have a clue to what happened, she was out cold asleep at the time, she claims that she's the one who did it.

It's Dr. Jeffrey Webster who's assigned to the case to find out what kind of mental condition that Gina is in and soon fall under her spell and in love with her. The rest of the story is a bit muddled in that Webster isn't a Casavin but in fact ends up paying with his life, unless his birth certificate was forged, for being one. As for Gina she herself ended up dead in what looked like by her own hand after she murdered the totally confused and clueless, in what's going on, Dr. Webster.

***SPOILERS*** We soon get the drift to what's been happening when the totally unemotional Maranda, even when discovering Tyler's dead and chopped up body, pops up again at the end of the story and explains that she's behind all these murders in that she's the descendant of that witch that was killed by the Casavin's some 100 years ago. And now with the last-Gina-of the Casavin blood line blotted out she can now go back to doing what she does best: Working as a construction bricklayer and sheet metal worker at a high rise building site in downtown Miami Florida.

Grisly tale of a family curse
Leofwine_draca7 April 2015
THE CASAZIN CURSE, which is episode 24 of season 2 of TALES FROM THE DARKSIDE, offers something a little stronger than the norm, coming across as an episode of TALES FROM THE CRYPT rather than the lacklustre Romero-produced show. The storyline sees a beautiful young woman haunted by the effects of a centuries-old family curse, brought about by a vengeful witch. The curse says that anybody who falls in love with the woman will suffer a horrible death.

Of course, the outcome in this tale is highly predictable, but to counter this the writer throws in quite a bit of bloodshed and violence along the way. It's not exactly strong sauce, but it is a welcome element considering all the ultra-tame, kid-friendly episodes this series has to offer. Sadly the acting is weak and the make up effects entirely cheap-looking, and this story needs more than a bit of violence to make it good.

Weird episode to close the season with
shellytwade28 January 2022
I'm not sure who decided the order these episodes should air but you would think that every season would end with a strong episode (along the lines of Yellow from Tales From The Crypt) but in this show they don't seem to be thinking along those lines, as what we have here is another silly episode that is just a waste of time to watch. Hopefully season 3 picks up.

Strong horrific episode
Woodyanders7 March 2014
Warning: Spoilers
The Casavin family suffer from an unusual curse that makes all of them unable to get intimate with anyone that they love. Director Frank De Palma, working from a morbidly compelling script by Edithe Swenson, relates the darkly intriguing story at a steady pace and maintains a grimly serious tone throughout. The sound acting by the able cast keeps it on track: Joe Cortese as the protective Nicholas Casavin, Catherine Parks as the troubled Gina, Scott Lincoln as the smitten and sympathetic psychiatrist Dr. Jeffrey Webster, and Julie Ariola as the concerned Miranda Dean. A bold incest subplot and the surprisingly bloody'n'gruesome violence give this show an extra unsettling edge. The surprise bummer ending packs a really startling punch, too. A worthy closer for the second season.
