- Data rescues an orphaned boy named Timothy from a damaged ship. As a way to repress his own pain, Timothy begins to mimic Data's personality.

- The Enterprise finds the remains of a badly damaged Federation ship with only one survivor aboard, a young man by the name of Timothy. The damaged ship was inside a black cluster, a cosmic phenomena that distorts gravity. Learning how the ship came to be destroyed is a challenge and when Timothy is unable to recall exactly what happened Data is tasked with befriending him to see what he can learn. The boy's response is to further repress all emotion, taking on Data's emotionless personality. When the Enterprise comes under attack, Timothy recalls what happened on the bridge of the damaged ship allowing Data to take appropriate action.—garykmcd
- A Starfleet ship Vico has a disaster in the largest black cloud ever observed, an astronomical phenomenon which gravely distorts gravity itself. This black cluster was formed 9 billion years ago when hundreds of Proto stars collapsed in close proximity. The resulting gravitational forces are violent and unpredictable. The Enterprise is sent in after the research vessel sent to investigate the cloud goes missing. When Enterprise reaches the location, it finds a badly damaged ship, with many sections exposed to the open space. The ship is currently holding due to emergency bulkheads but is likely to collapse soon. Picard orders an away team to rescue any survivors and also retrieve the ship's logs which cannot be accessed remotely due to signal not being able to penetrate the emergency bulkheads.
Data, as part of the away team ordered by Picard to establish a link with the ship's computers, is able to rescue a single survivor, the young boy Timothy (Joshua Harris). Riker is unable to transport the boy out, as he is pinned under structural beams on the ship. Data removes the debris, takes Timothy out and transports him away before the ship collapses in on itself. Geordi is able to transfer the ship's files, but many of them are damaged. Timothy lost both his parents on the star ship (His mother was the Engineer and his father was the 2nd officer on the bridge) and suppresses the unspeakable trauma. Timothy may have invaluable information about what happened and how the Enterprise will be able to best to handle the black cloud itself.
Timothy says that when inside the cloud, the research ship was attacked, and armed men boarded it with helmets and phaser rifles. Sensor readings from the ship's logs also indicate a possible attack from a cloaked ship at very close range of 3000 meters. But it would have to be Romulans or Klingon, who are very far from this section of space, or the Breen, who have outposts in this sector. But Geordi says there was no evidence of anyone transporting aboard the vessel prior to its destruction.
Troi encourages savior Data to spend time with Timothy. Timothy is astonished to learn that as an android, Data cannot feel any emotions. Timothy decides to 'become' an android, physically and mentally superior to humans, like his mentor. But he continues to suppress his memories and tells Data that sometimes he has nightmares.
When the Enterprise reaches the black cloud, the bridge officers prove unable to handle it in any known way like the other ship. Enterprise sensors see echo of its own ship due to distortions created by the massive cluster. As the Graviton wave front approaches, Picard is out of options and orders Phasers to be fired, which are ineffective. The officers, including Data are not able to figure out if the wave front represents an enemy ship or a natural phenomenon. Plus, it is also not clear if a cloaked ship could exist inside the black cloud and if so, did it attack the research vessel Vico.
Timothy maintains that the ship was attacked. But when Data tells him that androids do not lie, Timothy says that "I killed them all". Basically, Timothy believes that the ship was destroyed when his arm touched the computer panel, due to the shaking of the ship. But it is likely that it was just a mere coincidence. Deanna convinces Timothy that he is not to blame.
Meanwhile, the Graviton wave-front collides with the Enterprise. Engines are down and shields are barely holding. Picard orders all available energy into the shields. Timothy remembers that the vessel also followed the same procedure. Data checks the computer info and asks Picard to drop the shields just seconds before the wave-front hits again. The wave-front was basically having an energy resonance with the shields. So, as Picard increased shields, the wave-front responded equally and more. Data was able to figure this out from the logs of the destroyed vessel.
