Sisko notes the names of some of the officers whom he served with on the U.S.S. Okinawa: Daneeka, McWatt, Snowden, Orr, and Moodus. All of these are the names of characters in Joseph Heller's book "Catch 22".
In the scene at Quark's with O'Brien and Bashir fresh from the holosuite dressed as RAF pilots in the Battle of Britain, O'Brien's references to "cabbage crates coming over the briny" and "pranged his kite" are from The Light Entertainment War (1974): "The Banter Sketch". O'Brien even puts on the same slangish accent as Michael Palin does in the Python sketch.
Brock Peters, who plays Joseph Sisko, previously played Admiral Cartwright in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (1986) and Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (1991).
It is revealed that Captain Sisko's middle name is Lafayette. It had been originally suggested in the tie-in book "Legends of The Ferengi" by Ira Steven Behr and Robert Hewitt Wolfe.
Susan Gibney, who plays Erika Benteen, previously portrayed Dr. Leah Brahms in Booby Trap (1989) and Galaxy's Child (1991).
