A good example of the battle between corporations and independent businesses
egunderson2428 March 2019
Using the two coffee shops in the small mountain town, the long-beloved Tweeks and the newly-built Harbucks, this manages to show how corporates like T-series or Wal-mart taking over smaller businesses can be devastating for the former. However it also explains how they have gotten there by selling high quality products (or just getting a lot of sales in some cases). It also goes well into how people can blindly follow what everyone tells them to, even if they have no concrete evidence to back it up. The ending does feel like a large U-turn and it does feel a bit forced, but thankfully everything else manages to be pretty solid. The speech at the end, par usual to the course, manages to be pretty well executed too. The comedy isn't some of the series' best material but when the jokes hit their mark they work pretty well. It may not be the best episode in the series, but it certainly does contain many things that they are known for.

Gnomes
RicketyCricketImposter23 December 2021
This is a really great episode and easily on of my favorites from the earlier seasons. It's just got so many great moments, and is also some of Trey and Matt's examples of not being too political, but doing it right. 8.4.

Gnomes (#2.17)

Warning: Spoilers
A fun episode. Introduction to the fun characters like Tweek and his family. His addiction to coffee is really fun to watch. And so is his dad who always speaks in some poetic way of marketing the coffee, every time he speaks it makes one laugh.

Besides that we have a fun mockery of people hating on the corporations. Sure pretty simplified as I would not say that chain coffee is usually all that good. But it definitely gets where it does because of achievement both combining the coffee and marketing. And why should we all hate on success.

The gnomes with the steeling of underwear were also a great idea. Definitely a wonderful South Park episode.

Introducing Tweek; the coffee addicted child
Tweekums22 September 2012
Warning: Spoilers
When Mr. Garrison is threatened with the sack for failing to teach his children anything relevant he is given one last chance; his class must give a presentation on a current event in South Park. The class is divided into groups and Stan, Kyle, Kenny and Cartman end up in the same group as Tweek. Tweek is the highly strung son of the local coffee shop owner; he is clearly drinking far too much coffee but his parents think it is just ADD! Tweek suggests that they write a report on the gnomes that come into his room at three thirty each morning to steal his underpants… the other boys are suspicious of his story but agree to spend the night. Tweek's father has another idea about what they should do a presentation; corporate takeovers… all part of a ploy to whip up feeling against the coffee giant 'Harbucks' that is opening a shop next door to his. The boys are so busy listening to his suggestion that they miss seeing the gnomes! The presentation goes well… to well in fact; they are then asked to help raise the issue with the mayor before going on to speak to the town on the matter.

This is probably my favourite episode of South Park; the story is fun and includes some great new characters. Tweek is hilarious with his constant hair-pulling and complaining about the pressure of the situation. I must confess I liked this character enough to take my screen name from it! Tweek's father is also pretty funny as everything he says sounds as if it is something from a coffee commercial. The Gnomes' business acumen is a classic South Park moment with their 'stage one, steal underpants; stage 2, ?; Stage three, profit' motto. The regular cast behave as one would expect providing plenty of laughs; I particularly liked how they barely batted an eyelid as Kenny died while the gnomes freaked out. This is a classic episode; lots of laughs; somewhat surreal but not too much so and not too offensive… all in all; the perfect South Park episode!

Brilliantly explains why small businesses have such a high failure rate
AlsExGal27 November 2020
In the process of writing a school report on big versus small business, and paired with a nervous kid named Tweek whose parents run an independent coffee shop, the boys have an encounter with "underwear gnomes" who steal underwear in the middle of the night.

The gnomes say that they can help the boys with their report, since they claim that gnomes are geniuses at business. They reveal their business plan:

1. Collect underpants

2. ???

3. Profit

So basically this is the business plan of 95% of people who want to go into business for themselves.

1. Do something that they really enjoy and that they do well, but may or may not be useful to anybody else.

2. They don't know yet

3. Make lots of money.

And that is why they fail. They have no idea of how to get from step one to step three. Either that or they make an awful product. An object lesson in this is Tweek's parents' coffee shop, which makes coffee that tastes like caribou have waded through it. This is a very witty episode of South Park and I highly recommend it.
