Savage, kind, knowing and innocent
unbrokenmetal22 March 2014
The pilot Cutter (John Allen Nelson) is hired by shady customers who try and get rid of him later. Sheena (Gena Lee Nolin) rescues Cutter's life from double danger when he is stuck in quicksand and about to be shot, then they chase the bad guys together. Simple story for the opening of the new series. Its main purpose is to introduce the two main characters, naturally. Kali describes Sheena as "savage, kind, knowing and innocent", and it is a sign of careful updating, another generation onwards, that Gena's Sheena is more knowing than Tanya Roberts' Sheena was in 1984 and much more than Irish McCalla's Sheena in the 1950s. When Cutter once says "I don't bite" she returns "How do you eat then?" and it takes him a few seconds to realize she was joking, only pretending to be naive. Sheena 2000 also got a completely new skill. She can not just communicate with animals, but like a shape-shifter transform into them. I did not like the smooth, computer-generated morphing effects, but that is a matter of taste. Other than that, a promising start.

It does what it has to do

A competent pilot episode, well-filmed and decently acted. Gina Lee Nolin would warm up her portrayal a bit more mid-season, so it's David Allen Nelson who shows the greater promise ... unless that can-I-use-your-waterfall bit is what you came for. The main thing here is setting up the situation and creating a willingness to watch more; this episode does that.
