George (Jason Alexander) being barred from the bathroom was inspired by writer Larry Charles's use of the private bathroom in Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David's office.
Larry David was the original voice of Newman, who is heard but not seen in this episode. After Wayne Knight was cast as the character, he dubbed the voice for syndication.
The jacket Kramer (Michael Richards) wears at the first scene in the laundry is the suede jacket Jerry (Jerry Seinfeld) bought in The Jacket (1991).
Newman was originally written as the African-American son of Jerry's landlord. William Thomas Jr. was cast but the role was greatly reduced during production. Tim Russ also auditioned for the role.
The horse that is bet on is named Papa Nick. Pete G. Papanickolas was a key grip throughout the show.
