Inspector Benet, who is being blackmailed by Paul Vercors into helping the communists, is persuaded to assist Vercors in exacting revenge for the massacre of Max and his associates, by executing Albert. With the war continuing to turn slowly away from the Germans, Madeleine Duclos is concerned for her future as the lover of Kessler, but Kessler is more concerned with pursuing his suspicions that Major Reinhardt, like his predecessor Major Brandt, was implicated in the recent plot to assassinate Hitler.
Meanwhile, Albert gets word of the communist plot to kill him, and the Candide staff arm themselves. Inspector Benet attends the restaurant, as do Kessler and Reinhardt, but no attack on Albert is made until he attempts to close the restaurant, at which point he is arrested by Benet and taken away. After leaving the Candide, Kessler confronts Reinhardt but is unable to prove his involvement in the assassination plot.
