Doodlebug is what Pat calls the "perfect" forked stick he finds to use as a divining rod. And once he finds it, he is determined to prove it works. Meanwhile hotheaded Marv Hanley thinks his son's loyal dog killed a sheep and tries to shoot it. Roy has to fight Marv to stop him. Roy then shows him that it was a mountain lion that killed his sheep. Marv's brother-in-law Dunc has fallen on hard times and Marv ridicules him for it. Dunc then tries to rob the stage with an evil companion. The stage driver is killed and Roy shoots the evil companion and Dunc, who gets away badly wounded. The posse that goes after him includes Marv, who just wants to kill Dunc. Roy and the sheriff have a hard time trying to control this trigger happy rancher. Will he ever see how wrong he is? Eventually, Pat's doodlebug does find water, but not exactly in the way Pat expected.
