Good vs Evil
unbrokenmetal8 May 2014
Somewhere in Hungary, 1595. The brave knight Gabriel (blond hair) slew the demonic knight Belial (black hair) who turned into stone. Over 400 years later, the monks of a monastery are still hiding that 'statue' of Belial, with Gabriel's sword protruding from it. But when Sydney and Nigel are visiting the monastery, they are not welcome: „Visitors are strictly forbidden", they are told by the abbot, the story about Gabriel's sword would only be a fable, and they didn't have any sword in a stone. Do you think Sydney and Nigel give up now and fly back home, or will they dig deeper? Easy to guess...

It's a good action adventure episode, straight forward and well paced. There is a believable conflict between monks who want to continue the old ways and others, who would like to modernize the order. Tia Carrere does some of her best fencing of the entire series, she gets to kick and hit some monks, too (who might remember on this occasion that monks should avoid women). The demon looks a bit silly, like a black metal musician with poor make-up, but we don't take it too seriously, anyway, do we?

Brother Theodore

Warning: Spoilers
The actor playing Brother Theodoric looked so much like the real Brother Theodore, complete with crazy hair, it cannot have been a coincidence. Although I'm probably one of the very small percentage of Relic Hunter viewers who remembers who he was. It made me biased while watching this episode because I couldn't help but like the character, even when he released the bees. (Not the bees!)

This was a relatively average episode. The scene with Claudia and the decorator was very weirdly shot and that whole storyline was strangely just dropped - though probably for the best. When Gabriel and Belisle were fighting the opening, I wondered if this was going to be another episode with professional wrestlers. Dressing them both like they were in an 80s hair metal band was definitely a choice. Their long wigs were impressive. Belisle's KISS meets The Phantom of the Paradise make up was super out of place. He was probably the most memorable, if comical, character of the episode.

I couldn't help but think this was one of those plots where one person illogically keeping a secret is the only way the show could happen. There seemed like no real reason for Theodoric to not just tell Sydney at the start that freeing the sword would release an evil. But overall the story was decent enough. I liked that Nigel took a bit more of the lead this time.

A decent, non-memorable episode.
