During filming, Craig Charles was called away for the birth of his son, Jack, so production manager Mike Agnew stepped in. Although Lister is wearing a space suit at the time you can still tell which part is Mike thanks to a continuity error - Mike forgot to put on Lister's plaster cast. According to the insert notes with the Series II DVD set, the moon scenes were shot at the same location where the beach sequences in Better Than Life (1988) were taped, and the scenes involving Charles were filmed quickly while they awaited the arrival of a vehicle to take Charles to the birth. Someone discovered the scene and said to Ed Bye at a convention that it could have been a flashback being watched in a mirror. Bye then said: "Yes, that's right. Well done for noticing."
A quarry in Wales was used for the location of Rimmer's death-day opening scene for the episode. The live action footage of the scene was merged with model footage of Blue Midget and Red Dwarf, which was seen in the distant background.
A shot of Lister and the Cat in space suits dropping the slab is used in the title sequence for Series III, and is the only shot in it that isn't from that series.
The scene which Lister and Cat drop the gravestone where they bury the black box on a barren moon, is featured in the title sequence of Series 3, although "Thanks for the Memory" wasn't an episode of Series 3.
Parallels have been drawn between this episode and Clues (1991), produced two years later. Both stories are based around the crew of their respective ships waking to discover they are missing time and set about recovering their memories - only to discover they were better off not knowing.
