- As the crew contend with Starbug's dwindling supplies, they find themselves being pulled towards a deserted space station where they meet the brilliant but mysterious Legion. Legion wishes only to fulfill their every need, but to what end?
- Starbug is taken over by a tractor beam which takes them to a deep-space space station, where the crew discover 'Legion' a life form conceived from a experiment by famous scientists. They soon learn that Legion is composed from the minds of each member of the crew - and won't let them leave to continue the search for Red Dwarf.—Daniel Williamson
- Supplies are running low on Starbug and Kryten is serving up a space weevil that has eaten the corn supply to Lister, Cat is on pilot's duty and can smell a threat incoming, an object is headed towards them, a projectile of some sort, evasive maneuvers don't work and they're hit, all electronics are out on Starbug, the craft is caught in a tractor beam and pulled to a space station. Kryten scans the computer for information but all he can get is references to classified military research and the names of the research team, Heidegger, Davro, Holder and Quayle.
The crew disembark to look for salvage and Cat detects another strange scent, they walk near an elevator and a character exits, a figure hidden behind a chrome Buddha mask, he is polite and sophisticated and knows who everyone is. He takes Rimmer's light bee and removes the innards, placing a chip inside, he has upgraded Rimmer's light bee from soft-light to hard-light, Rimmer now has a solid physical presence. The figure takes out Lister's appendix which is dangerously infected. The figure invites them to dinner, his name is Legion.
The crew are taken to a dining room furnished with art made by Legion himself, he goes to bring the food, Rimmer believes they should take him with them as he could get them to Earth in no time, the others aren't sure as he would not fit in, Rimmer suggests putting on an act of erudition to convince Legion to join them.
Legion brings in the food, an alien banquet which is eaten with anti-matter chopsticks, Kryten is versed in the cuisine and implements, but the others stumble, sending food everywhere, Legion is aware the others are pretending to be sophisticated and is unable to leave the station, Kryten says they will leave, Legion however won't let them, he insists they stay as his guests for the rest of their lives.
They are sent to separate cells which look like luxury rooms, attuned to their personal tastes, they spend the night with Legion and meet at breakfast, they seem content with the surroundings but Kryten reminds them their are lagging even further behind Red Dwarf, Lister schemes up an escape plan re-enacted from a schlock horror film, it involves putting a statue in his place and waiting to jump Legion with another statue as a weapon, Legion sees right through it, having seen the film, Lister hits him with the statue knocking off his mask, the face underneath is made of quarters of the Red Dwarf crew, he throws Lister across the dining table knocking him out, the Lister quarter disappears from his face and reappears when Lister comes to.
Legion reveals his origins, he was created as a collective intelligence, all the art was from his original incarnation, the researchers that created him, they died from old age and he was reduced to a mindless vapor, his existence is dependent on the presence of others. Kryten tests a theory which proves true, he knocks out all the others until Legion is comprised only of him, and he now shares the command of serving the others, they drag the crew back to Starbug and Kryten asks if Legion created something to help their recapture of Red Dwarf.
Back on Starbug Kryten hooks up a device from Legion, a star drive, it could catch up with Red Dwarf in nanoseconds but the others expect it to fail. Kryten reminds them that if they combine their minds they can accomplish anything, mirroring their experiences with Legion, Kryten activates the drive and it takes off and flies out of Starbug, the episode ends with others holding onto structure as the ship is decompressed.
