- Bea Smith: The trouble with Ferguson is she's just too bloody smart by half. She may be a screw but she thinks just like one of us.
- Chrissie Latham: She's cleverer than us; she don't get caught!
- Bea Smith: No. That can't last. Everybody gets caught. Eventually.
- Joan 'The Freak' Ferguson: Marvellous, isn't it? What they'll do to avoid a scandal.
- Meg Morris: It stinks!
- Joan 'The Freak' Ferguson: Latham and Smith are lucky the others are so conveniently dead.
- Meg Morris: It *stinks* because the person really responsible is going to get off scot-free!
- Maxine Daniels: You'll thank me for this one day, granny!
- Lizzie Birdsworth: I'm not gonna thank you for anything, you cheeky little bugger!
- Bea Smith: I should have killed you when I had the chance.
- Joan 'The Freak' Ferguson: Is that any way to speak to someone who saved your life?
- Colleen Powell: What is Ferguson doing back on duty?
- Erica Davidson: Miss Ferguson has assured me she is quite capable of...
- Colleen Powell: Mrs Davidson! Joan Ferguson has been a disruptive and perverse influence on this prison since the day she started
- Erica Davidson: There is no proof...
- Colleen Powell: No, please! Let me finish. Okay, it's true - we don't have any proof of her corruption, but the mere fact that we tried to get the proof shows that the problem exists. And we can be pretty sure she was a catalyst in the events leading up to the fire. So it is sheer madness to bring her back under the circumstances. My God! It's only going to antagonise the women and demoralise the rest of the staff.
- Erica Davidson: Have you quite finished? Then I shall try to explain the situation as I see it. Miss Ferguson has an impeccable record.
- Colleen Powell: But...
- Erica Davidson: And there is absolutely no evidence to support the accusations that have been brought against her. I can't object to her returning to work simply because the prisoners dislike her.
- Colleen Powell: They *hate* her!
- Erica Davidson: If I were to reject every officer in that category I wouldn't have any staff left. Furthermore you and the department went over my head and made an arrangement with the prisoners which has quashed any possibility into an open enquiry into Miss Ferguson's actions before or during the fire. You were also in charge of the women's return from Woodridge which makes you responsible for them not having been searched properly. I might point out, Mrs Powell, that the department is far more concerned at the moment with your competence as deputy governor than with Miss Ferguson's ability as an officer. I suggest you consider that before making any actions which the authorities might consider as vindictive.
- Margo Gaffney: Still playing the good fairy, Mrs Morris? Would've thought you'd had your wings clipped by now.
