Brian meets Beverly at the Phoenix Club's singles night.
This has a decent character arc for Brian, but as always, it's all about the humour.
The singles club night is very well staged. Visually it feels quite authentic with an abundance of men lurking around the edges of the room and the odd woman scattered here and there. You get the feeling that nobody is there other than the regulars. This is an accurate depiction of my local working man's club, particularly the character who moves from one woman to the next trying various pick up lines. Everything down to the crumbling cigarette in the slow dance is spot on. Of course the banter between the characters like Lesley, Alan, Max, Paddy, Jerry and Kenny is excellent.
The above sets the scene for Brian and Beverly's romance, which includes several hilarious verbal and sight gags.
There is an underlying theme of loneliness and characters searching for companionship. It feels a little bleak when you think too hard about it, but the characters and jokes are so funny that it works so well.
All performances are excellent, especially Peter Kay and Jo Enright.
