The Odd Couple TV show often included gentle jabs at contemporary culture (early 1970s) and commentary on social issues. In this story, Felix is photographing the princess of a small European country (with the fictitious name of Lichtenberg, which, in reality, is a neighborhood of Berlin). The princess invites Felix and Oscar to a reception at her hotel, where one of the guests is the Consul from Nigeria, a tall, elegant black man (played by Albert Popwell]) dressed in a colorful African robe. When Oscar arrives late, he explains that he was delayed when a truck hit a wagon full of watermelons. A few minutes later, the Nigerian Consul speaks to Oscar alone: Consul: "You mentioned something about watermelons." Oscar: "Oh, yes, there was this accident, see, and they went all over the street," Consul: "Oh yes, how sad. About this watermelon. Is it a food of your people, yes?" Oscar: (seemingly unsure whether the Consul is serious or not) "Yes." Consul: "Interesting." (The Consul leaves to speak to other guests.)
The Consul from Nigeria was not Scoey Mitchell but it was in fact Albert Popwell. He was know for his parts in the first four Dirty Harry movies.
Oscar's comment "I think I'm falling in love with a princess" references a then current Telephone Company ad campaign concerning the then new princess model phones.
This episode is written by Bill Idelson and directed by Jerry Paris. Both acted on "The Dick Van Dyke Show": Bill Idelson played Sally's boyfriend Herman Glimpsheer and Jerry Paris played the Petrie's next door neighbor Dr. Jerry Helper.
