Classic TV Xmas Countdown Episode #46
kgraovac20 December 2023
Murphy's on a quest to find an elusive Power Ninja action figure for Avery.

This Seventh-Season offering isn't as good as the Season Five Xmas episode, but it's your best bet over the Season 1 and Season 3 holiday installments.

Corky's having another lousy Xmas - this time because a flood has ruined all the presents and decorations in her condo's storage unit. The bulk of the episode is focused on Murphy's hunt for the toy. It's amusing when she shows Frank the Polaroids she snapped of various mall Santas to help decide on the "perfect" one for Avery to have his picture taken with. Even better is when she brings a camera to take her own Santa photo of him!

When the toy quest seems fruitless, Frank is funny when trying to sell Murphy on a cheap knock-off called "Tough Guy Man". Murphy is resigned to having to disappoint Avery until Eldin's mom comes through (I haven't watched this show in so long I had forgotten Anne Meara was in it). She makes a nostalgic reference to Kresge's department store where she had bought Eldin a "Kookie Edd Byrnes Grooming Kit" back in the day.

Little Avery is played here by a cute little toddler who acts very natural and realistic - a rarity for a sitcom. They usually cast an overly-precocious older child to "play younger".

In the closing scene, Murphy recites a version of "Twas the Night Before Xmas" peppered with funny political references, including one about then-controversial gays in the military. 6/10.
