"Who's Cheating Whom?" And Who's Spreading Doom?
WeatherViolet30 October 2009
This episode marks the only acting credit thus far for Pat Stewart, who appears as on onlooker in the opening outdoor rally scene.

When "The Dream Team" comes to a town, plenty of nightmares are surely to follow, especially after the team employs Grady Fletcher (Michael Horton, in his twelfth and final appearance in the role) as its accountant.

Columbus Ventures is financed by Everett Buffum (Frank Converse), who operates in association with J. Peter Carmody (John D'Aquino), Toni Shaw (Yvette Nipar) and, now, Grady Fletcher, whom they discuss as the perfect candidate to convince locals to approve of the construction of "Marina Amerciana," a convention center proposed in coastal Maine between the communities of Cabot Cove and Craggey Neck.

Cabot Cove Realtor Pauline Higgins (Mary Gordon Murray) immediately objects to the project, which would compete with shoppes and rental units in the community, she thereby organizing a protest rally.

Doctor Seth Hazlitt (William Windom) organizes a protest of his own, as Marina Americana would displace the dilapidated Cabot Cove Lighthouse, which he intends to protect as an historical monument.

Lorna Buffum (Katherine Cannon), the estranged wife of Everett, arrives in town to attempt to expose Columbus Ventures as an operation of swindlers, and also to harm Everett and Toni Shaw, who has usurped Lorna's place in her husband's life.

Denver Martin (Charles Napier) arrives from Darwin Key, Florida, to expose the operation as corrupt for draining his late mother's bank account, transferring her $75,000 to an offshore account, and causing her untimely demise.

Noah Farmer (Jay Patterson), a desk clerk at Hill House Inn, attempts to accommodate "The Dream Team," while investing in properties for which he anticipates their intent to purchase for their project.

To shake any doubts of the legitimacy of this operation, Grady invites Aunt Jessica Fletcher (Angela Lansbury), Sheriff Mort Metzger (Ron Masak) and other locals, including Travis Lawder (Richardson Morse) to a presentation of the proposed construction, at which members offer wondrous promises to benefit the communities, even to win over Seth's doubts with their plan for a lighthouse restoration project.

Behind the scenes, much wheeling and dealing transpires, as it has in Cambria, Oregon, where the team has faced opposition from an environmentalist society to delay construction, and in Darwin Key, Florida, where the results of hurricanes have postponed construction.

But in Cabot Cove, while objections now seem to become assuaged, Columbus Ventures plans to move forward--or, at least until a murder complicates matters.

While Jessica, Sheriff Metzger and Deputy Andy Broom (Louis Herthum) investigate the murder, Grady comes up with an idea to raise funds through private donations, and five days later, "The Dream Team" raises four million dollars, or at least until something else comes up to push Grady Fletcher into even deeper hot water. Grady doesn't float through life all that easily.

The plot is a little far fetched, but it's nostalgic.
Sleepin_Dragon17 March 2024
Property developers arrive, planning to build a massive development between Cabot Cove and Craggy Neck, Grady has landed himself a job on the development, but not all is as it seems at Columbus Ventures.

As has been mentioned, it's a totally ludicrous plot, 800 condos, theatres and heaven knows what being built in Cabot Cove, surely alarm bells would have been ringing.

On the plus side, I'm so glad to have some of that cosy familiarity back, Jessica has been here there and everywhere lately, so good to see her back in Cabot Cove, together with the regulars.

Unlike many, I'm glad to see Grady back, I was surprised to see he only appeared in eleven or so episodes, and he last appeared some five years before, his character didn't seem to fit with the more serious direction the show went in.

I think this is better than some of the recent episodes I've seen, by no means a classic, but in reality, it's not bad.

7/10.

The dream Team
coltras3511 August 2023
The townspeople of Cabot Cove are concerned about a massive development on their shore and it is further complicated for Jessica since the firm employs her nephew Grady.

Jessica Fletcher investigates when Cabot Cove falls victim to a massive development scheme and a murder occurs. Her enquiries are complicated by the fact that the firm responsible employs her nephew.

The brain box nephew of Jessica, Grady, returns, and ends up working for some massive developers. It's obvious that they are dodgy. It's a fairly competent mystery, a little convoluted and the plot drags a little. Grady must be the most incompetent nephew of Jessica but he's entertaining to watch.

Could Grady be the dumbest character ever to appear on Murder, She Wrote?
txriverotter29 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Answer=YES!

He isn't on for two seasons (at least) and here he comes back to town with a group of con artists in tow. And Grady the hapless moron, has jumped into their scheme with all four of his left feet, without investigating or checking into any of the people involved or their so-called company.

The first curious thing is, how did these yahoos even find Grady? Shouldn't he be wondering about that? Shouldn't we? They've been operating in Oregon and Florida, now in Maine, and he lives in New York.

They just HAPPENED to run into Grady, the nephew of Cabot Cove's most prominent citizen, as one con puts it? And they just HAPPENED to be planning a huge building project in the community Grady hails from? And they just HAPPENED to offer him a job?

The whole thing should be questionable, but the first tell-tale we are given is Jessica taking a message from Donna, to tell Grady they've been turned down for a home reno loan because the "company" Grady listed as his employer doesn't exist as far as they can tell.

So Metzger supposedly investigates...HA! Metzger investigating is pretty funny. And the whole company is supposedly legit, it's just so new nobody has them in their computer yet. And how could that be? They've been working on these huge projects in Oregon and Florida, and it would've taken "at least" a year on each one for a real business project like this to even get started, so how in the heck are they considered a "new" business? How does no one know about them? Especially with the amount of funding they're dealing with. But the core group is all satisfied now and la-dee-da, let's keep going.

So then the lusch soon-to-be-ex-wife who followed the Cons to town decides she's gonna out them all, because the female con/home wrecker has stolen her husband. So the wife is murdered, we're to assume by one of the Cons or the husband. And suddenly Emmett, the husband has the bad feels and doesn't want to play games with his money anymore, so he's hittin' the road. Convenient, huh?

But Grady, being the hapless moron he is, comes up with a way for his Con employers to scam each member of the Cabot Cove community on an individual basis. And boy, does he?! To the tune of $4 Million dollars!

I find myself asking how many people really live in Cabot Cove, that they came up with THAT much money in such a short amount of time? Or are they all independently wealthy now?

So, the citizen's money starts clearing the banks, is immediately moving off-shore, and lo and behold Grady's employers have cleared off too. And right when Jessica figured it all out too! Darn it!

And so the episode ends when Jessica reveals the local murderer and an APB is put out for the Cleared Out Cons, Grady gets an awesome phone call that a New York job is waiting for him back home and he's packing his bags to leave as they all yuck it up.

THEN Metzger shows up to tell them the Cons have been caught and everyone will get their money back. It's "yays" all around, except, they didn't seem too darn worried about the money before Metzger even showed up.

But the episode ends with smiles and laughter all around so we're convinced all is well that ends well.

I LOVE this show. I love it with an all capital L-O-V-E. But this is one of those episodes, mostly Grady episodes, that makes me wonder what the writers were smoking that week.

Grady is back?! Uggh!
planktonrules19 August 2023
Cabot Cove, Maine is perhaps the strangest town I've seen on TV. After all, there must have been about 100 murders there over the course of twelve seasons...even though the population is supposed to be about 3000! This makes it the most dangerous town on Earth! Well, in "The Dream Team", it's gotten weirder, as now real estate developers are trying to build a huge convention center! All this....in quaint little Cabot Cove!!

This episode begins with a strike against it...Jessica's nephew Grady is back! He was a frequent guest star during the first few seasons and there was a huge gap between this one and the previous Grady episode. Fortunately, this one marks the final appearance of this pathetic character.

A group of folks have come to town to try to raise money for their proposed convention center/harbor front. Grady is among these people, as he's finally got a good job...or so he and everyone thinks. Actually, the developers appear to be crooks and Grady could be left holding the bag. But, being "Murder, She Wrote", you also know that someone's gonna die!

The idea of such a huge development being proposed for tiny Cabot Cove is utterly ridiculous. On the positive side, however, Grady isn't as bumbling and annoying as usual. Overall, not a great episode and it makes you wonder if in season 12 the town is going to host the Olympics or the next World's Fair!!

Convention Center near Cabot Cove?
bkoganbing26 June 2017
Try as I might I cannot wrap my mind around the idea of a huge urban style convention center right on the Maine coast near Cabot Cove. But that's what some folks in from the big city are pushing and when some big investors pull out it's Michael Horton, nephew of Jessica Fletcher who acts as a salesperson/pitchman for the project to get local investors.

The murder comes when a woman threatens to expose the crew working the scam. She's done in and of course Angela Lansbury finds the culprit.

But I have to put this one down as one of the weaker Murder She Wrote stories. The idea is so unbelievably preposterous.

Hardly a dream episode
TheLittleSongbird7 December 2017
Have always been quite fond of 'Murder She Wrote'. It is a fun and relaxing watch that makes you think as you try to unwind in the evening. If one wants more complex, twisty mysteries with lots of tension and suspense 'Murder She Wrote' may not be for you, but if you want something light-hearted and entertaining but still provide good mysteries 'Murder She Wrote' fits the bill just fine.

"The Dream Team" is also for me one of the lesser 'Murder She Wrote' episodes and one of Season 11's weakest alongside "Murder in High C" and "Twice Dead". Not unwatchable or bad enough to be a nightmare, but a long way from a classic or a dream. It does suffer from the presence of Grady, in his thankfully final appearance he is a bland dead-weight and annoys rather than endears (his role and what he does in it are questionable).

Many other things cripple it too. The premise was unbelievable to begin with, and the execution of it is utter nonsense. The story rarely rings true and is every bit as dull as Grady himself. Found myself caring or engaging with very little for the characters and at the end of the day who committed the murder and why, which weren't surprising all that much.

Dialogue is not the thought-provoking or amiable kind one expects from 'Murder She Wrote', here it's pretty dreary. The younger cast are completely lacking in charisma or natural line delivery, meaning that it is left to the regulars/recurring characters and older guest cast to deliver the goods.

And deliver the goods they thankfully do. Angela Lansbury is terrific in justifiably one of her best remembered roles. Likewise with charming William Windom as everybody's favourite curmudgeon doctor and likable Ron Masak. Older guest cast members include Charles Napier.

Production values are slick and stylish with a very atmospheric foggy setting in places. The music has energy and has presence but also not making the mistake of over-scoring, while it is hard to forget or resist the theme tune.

In conclusion, fairly lacklustre. 4/10 Bethany Cox
