Jessica investigates a murder on the set of Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho (1960). In the opening credits there is a burst of the theme tune from Alfred Hitchcock Presents (1955) and a man that looks like Hitchcock crosses the street. This is a nod to the cameos that Hitchcock made in most of his films.
In "Incident in Lot 7", the novel of Jessica's being made into a movie is called "Messengers of Midnight". Jessica says that it's based on a true story, a car going over a cliff is mentioned, and a particular character is named as the killer. All of this means that the "true story" Jessica wrote into the novel was her investigation in The Committee (1991), written by J. Michael Straczynski.
Larry Carroll, who plays a TV reporter, was an actual Los Angeles news anchor at the time.
This episode centers around the Hitchcock film, Psycho (1960). At one point Jessica watches a scene from Psycho where the Detective Arbogast enters the Bates house and is killed- The detective is played by Martin Balsam. Martin Balsam appeared in Death Stalks the Big Top: Part 1 (1986) and (Part 2).
Oliver Thissle says he "wouldn't hurt a fly." This is part of the last line in "Psycho," spoken by Norman Bates.
