Still Waters Run Deep!!!

Warning: Spoilers
Not the best episode I've seen but one of the quirky "black humour" episodes. Around the time of "Murder in Mind" Rob Brydon was the star of "Marion and Geoff" - it was a comedy/drama in which a taxi driver records his feelings and views on life and his soon to be ex wife into a video camera. It was terrific stuff and obviously the producers of "Murder in Mind" thought it might work as a basis for one episode and they were right.

Barry Coates (Brydon) is a waste disposal manager, a job he takes great pride in, that and his new whizz bang mini computer. The episode opens on a family dinner with Barry telling the audience (us) that he has just discovered his wife is having an affair with his brother in law - courtesy of a recording device on his new computer that he had accidentally left on!!! Barry is thought of as the family nerd, a doormat whose feelings are never considered - but inside he is a mass of emotions, or as he likes to put it - "I want to put things right - with the guilty punished of course"!!

He desperately wants to make them pay and one night when he is robbed by a "faceless" thug - hoodie, tracksuit etc, he realises that he could do something similar and just disappear into the night. He puts his plan into action and with his knowledge of garbage pick-up time tables, is able to leave his bag of blood stained clothes in the middle of the garbage route. Now Barry becomes the comfort of the family, seeing the two young boys don't get too distressed. But the dead man hasn't been exactly playing fair. Angela Coates (Geraldine Somerville) realises that, as well as her, he had other mistresses. Barry has involved her in the crime by muddying the evidence and things are looking bad for Angela. Then Angela starts to tell her story to the camera and you realise the game will soon be up for Barry!!!

Geraldine Somerville was quite a popular actress at that time - usually playing very intense characters. I can vividly remember her in "Cracker". It was interesting to see her in such a different role.

A first class performance from Rob Brydon.

A man takes revenge on his wife's lover, who happens to be a relation too.

The variety of this show has always amazed me, the previous one was so intense and heavy, this one is almost semi comical, the killer here is almost flippant, but cocky and measured, not the angry, enraged type, he's as cool as ice.

Rob Brydon is awesome here as Barry, I think it's fair to say that most of us think of him primarily as a comedy actor, but he shows he's incredibly versatile, he is truly brilliant in this, his talks to the camera are outrageously good.

Geraldine Somerville is great here too, a lovely actress, who's able to play tough and fragile parts alike, great interactions with Brydon, she like him did a great Northern accent.

I loved it, 9/10.
