Another tough and exciting episode of "Mannix"
planktonrules16 April 2013
A newspaper man has a lead on a hot story--that a local senator is corrupt. His source appears to be unimpeachable and he's all set to run with the story when the source disappears. So, they hire Intertech to locate the source so they can publish the incriminating evidence. However, as you'd expect on the show, you'd expect that there's a lot more to the story--and Mannix and Lew work together on this one.

The show is classic "Mannix"--with lots of fighting, shootings and other violence that made this show so popular. It also features a nice story with some exciting twists. All in all, a satisfying hour and another episode that's well worth seeing.

An excellent outing

Warning: Spoilers
A newspaper editor prints a story on a state senator based on a reliable source. Then the source disappears and the information seems bogus so the senator sues. The editor (Linden Chiles) and his lawyer (Noam Pitlik) hire Intertect and get Joe. Lots of action when the source (GD Spradlin) gets killed at a lake and Joe ends up in a shootout with a guy in a speedboat. Nita Talbot and Hampton Fancher are bad guys without a brain between them. They will also appear together in a season 5 Mannix episode. The head bad guy behind it all kills those two and wounds Mannix. Somewhat surprisingly, Lew shows up and wounds the bad guy and ends the case.

The cast is quite good with several TV veterans who bring their A game. I have seen GD Spradlin and Dabbs Greer in bigger roles but not to be in this outing. John Crawford is excellent as a harried Intertect computer man who is working the computers overtime and actually provides a phone number at the end that proves very helpful. This is his only Mannix appearance which is too bad. He makes a nice counter to Joe. We also see Aunt Harriet of Batman fame.

One minor quibble - the head bad guy has a revolver with a silencer on it. Silencers do not work on revolvers. Why do many TV shows make that mistake? All in all, a superb episode that may be the best so far in this young series.

Mike Axford and Aunt Harriet ...
tforbes-219 February 2020
Warning: Spoilers
"Turn Every Stone" is pretty typical of a Season 1 episode of Mannix, but what makes this stand out is the casting of Lloyd Gough and Madge Blake. The latter had already scaled back her appearances on Batman due to her declining health, but she managed to turn in an uncredited appearance here.

Here, we have a newspaper publisher and a senator at odds here, and Mannix is both dealing with a murder and a shootout on a body of water. What is initially a libel suit turns into something more.

As stated in an earlier review, Mannix and Lew work together on this one, and it is fun to see. That stated, it's understandable why Mannix ended up as a private detective on his own, starting in Season 2.

FIND THE GUY WITH THE HOT STUFF. REAL HOT!
tcchelsey3 January 2023
John Meredyth Lucas directed this adventure and at the time was also one of the producers and writers for STAR TREK and THE FUGITIVE.

This is your atypical case of DIRTY politics, all about a newspaper publisher who has dug up some dirt on a politician --and everything is going according to plan until his "source" disappears. How convenient. Mannix goes to work and be sure to RUN. The bad guys are coming for him in spades!

TERRIFIC cast at work here, as always. Linden Chiles (who played both good and bad guys with style) co-stars along with versatile Nita Talbot (as Gloria). Talbot played a wide variety of fun roles, best as a smart alecky type. Lloyd Gough, who was co-starring in the GREEN HORNET the time, plays Senator Minerva. Also look for Joan Tompkins (MY THREE SONS, as Katy's mom) and Madge Blake (BATMAN) playing Mrs. Pochek. To the surprise of many, it was learned in later years that Madge and her husband worked on TOP SECRET government projects during WWII and, in a way, were unsung heroes.

FILMED at pictureque Malibou Lake in Agoura, about 35 miles from LA. There is a club there that hosts weddings and events, and it must be something special to attend.

Recommended for us late night armchair thrill seekers! Keep the coffee brewing. SEASON 1 EPISODE 12 Dec 1967. Remastered CBS dvd box set.
