THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. – The Never-Never Affair – 1965

This is the 25th episode of 1964 to 1968 spy series, THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. The series ran for a total of 105 episodes. The first season was filmed in black and white with the remainder shot in colour. Robert Vaughn plays agent Napoleon Solo while David McCallum plays Illya Kuryakin. Leo G Carroll plays Mister Waverly, the boss of the secret agency known as U.N.C.L.E. (United Network Command for Law & Enforcement) Their main enemy is THRUSH, an organization out to take over the planet.

In this episode, THRUSH has come close to capturing Agent David McCallum. McCallum is carrying a list of THRUSH agents working in France. The head of THRUSH in France, Cesar Romero, is in New York to retrieve the micro film. UNCLE has the micro film info put on a micro dot. They intend to send the micro dot to France so UNCLE can round up the THRUSH types.

At UNCLE headquarters, while all this is going on, Agent 23, Barbara Feldon, is bored silly working in the UNCLE translator branch. She dreams of going on a "real" mission with danger involved. Robert Vaughn, feeling sorry for the woman, sends her on a fake mission. UNCLE boss, Leo G. Carroll, has run out of pipe tobacco. Vaughn gives her Carroll's tobacco humidor to get refilled at the tobacco shop. He tells Feldon it is a secret mission. Take the item to the shop, then return.

Anyways, through a series of misunderstood orders the micro dot is also given to Miss Feldon. Off she goes on her merry way, thinking THRUSH might be on every street corner and alleyway. UNCLE realizes that Feldon has the micro dot and Vaughn and McCallum set off to grab her up.

This idea goes sideways as Mister Romero and THRUSH tumble to Feldon being the possible courier. Soon Feldon and Vaughn are trussed up at THRUSH headquarters for a little talk. The where is the micro dot or do we need to torture you type of talk.

UNCLE reinforcements, led by Carroll and McCallum arrive just in time to rescue the pair. THRUSH boss Romero gets himself shot and captured in the process. Miss Feldon now decides she likes the office job she had before.

This is a first rate episode with the whole cast and crew shining. Miss Feldon would shoot to fame as agent 99 on GET SMART the same year as this episode. Cesar Romero is always a hoot in everything. He would hit it big again as "The Joker" on the camp 1966-1968 BATMAN series. The chemistry between Vaughn and Feldon hits the mark right down the line.

Barbara Felden on the rise

Warning: Spoilers
I remember watching this in 1965. The Man from U.N.C.L.E started out with very little interest in the Fall of 1964. It was considered for cancellation. Only a few college TV rooms had it on. It was changed to a different time, and slowly, and then rapidly, it became a phenomenon. All of TV became spy crazy, and U.N.C.L.E was the reason. And this episode is said to have put it over the top. It had the humor, the different action scenes (a THRUSH agent behind a movie screen with those never-seen-before rifles that could visualize at night--it made a weird sound). Barbara Felden was wonderful to watch, being an innocent in the midst of danger. I remember talking about this episode the next day in class. For 1965, this was fun and had the 'anything can happen' feel to the action. And having a Russian (David MacCallum) as one of the good guys was unheard of at the time. It was a part of all the things that were changing in the mid-60s. It won't have that same feeling looking at it now, but it's still an entertaining hour.

Excellent episode with top guest stars

Here we get a chance to see Barbara Feldon--working for UNCLE just before she began working for CONTROL in Get Smart! Her tremendous charm and intelligence shine in this episode. The other major guest star is Cesar Romero, as a suave French Thrush agent. Cesar really knows how to turn on the charm--he had a lot of experience doing just that in many 1930's and 1940's movies--and he is a pleasure to watch. The script and direction are excellent in this episode. This is the kind of blend of humor and action which made this such a memorable, indeed classic series.

Warning: Spoilers
Barbara Feldon thinks she is Agent 99 from The Get Smart Series. In this episode of UNCLE, she stars as a bored Portuguese interpreter who is looking for action from the UNCLE organization and she soon gets more than what she ever had anticipated life would be like as a daring spy.

To get her off his back after she tries to demonstrate how good she could be, Solo gives her a cup of Mr. Waverley's and unknowingly, there is important formation in the latter allowing THRUSH with Cesar Romero hot on her trail.

The usual shenanigans are used here.
