Solid addition to season four, quite well made in all departments.

The men from UNCLE, Solo and Kuriyakin, are sent to Querido, a country recently liberated from dictatorship to prevent the assassination of its new democratically elected leader Angela Abaca (played by Madlyn Rhue) who is worshipped by the people. However, attempts have been made on her life by the junta known as the 'Secret Three' who want to return the country to authoritarian rule. UNCLE chief Alexander Waverley (played by Leo G. Carroll) believes that THRUSH are bankrolling the shadowy 'Secret Three' since they want to control the energy rich country's oil supplies. Kuriyakin flies Angela to a safe house in a remote Swiss village whilst Solo infiltrates the junta. But, it isn't long before members of the 'Secret Three' start being murdered leading Solo to believe that one of them is trying to gain absolute power over it. Meanwhile, Kuriyakin and Angela's whereabouts are discovered and they are taken away to be executed. But whom is behind the coup? Will the UNCLE men be able to return Angela home safely to Querido and prevent her nation from becoming a THRUSH vassal state?

Another solid addition to the closing season of this classic 1960's spy series. It has a passable plot and it is quite well done in all departments. Solo gets plenty of action from getting himself arrested thus making it easier for him to investigate the junta, narrowly avoiding being crushed to death by a fighting bull and destroying a fort. Kuriyakin becomes Angela's personal bodyguard and his scenes with her are quite amusing since she is too stubborn to accept UNCLE's protection. There is an emotional element to the story too in Angela's devotion and passion for her country and its people. She is determined to prevent it from ever returning to being a dictatorship again and this comes off quite well under Richard Benedict's direction.

Viva Angela!

Warning: Spoilers
Angela Abaca is the democratically elected leader of a South American country. The people adore her. But she has enemies - a revolutionary group known only as 'The Secret Three' is plotting to assassinate her so that THRUSH can take over. After saving her life, Illya is mistakenly arrested and almost shot by a firing squad.

Once his identity is proved, he becomes a hero. This means he can no longer work secretly, hence he calls on Napoleon to find out who The Secret Three are. The answer is astonishing...

I usually dislike spy show plots where the hero has to act as bodyguard to some politician or ruler ( 'The Champions' episode 'Desert Journey' springs to mind ). What tends to happen is that the intended victim is depicted as being arrogant and unpleasant and only grows to like his/her 'guardian' after being saved from death. 'The Fiery Angel Affair' manages to confound expectations; it is exciting and boasts some unexpected twists and turns. Illya resorting to kidnapping being one ( he whisks Angela off to Switzerland where they pose as husband and wife ). The late Madlyn Rhue ( who previously appeared in Season 1's 'The Terbuf Affair' ) is well cast as the 'Evita' like leader.

Director Richard Benedict's other television credits include 'Get Smart' and 'Mission: Impossible'.

Season 4 is often criticised for its alleged lack of humour. This story has a scene in which Illya is mobbed by excited teenage girls, mirroring McCallum's real-life fame. It manages to be both funny and logical within the context of the plot.

Another good episode.
