THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. – The Deadly Goddess Affair - 1966

This is the 46th episode of 1964 to 1968 spy series, THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. The series ran for a total of 105 episodes. The first season was filmed in black and with the remainder shot in colour. Robert Vaughn plays agent Napoleon Solo while David McCallum, plays Illya Kuryakin, Leo G Carroll plays Mister Waverly, the boss of the secret agency known as U.N.C.L.E. (United Network Command for Law & Enforcement) Their main enemy is THRUSH, an organization out to take over the planet.

In this episode, UNCLE agents Robert Vaughn and David McCallum are in North Africa tailing THRUSH boss, Victor Buono. Buono is in charge of a THRUSH operation to overthrow several African governments. They discover that THRUSH is flying an aircraft with 10 million cash and coup plans down from Europe.

UNCLE shoots the plane down over a small Island in the Med. Vaughn and McCallum hit the tiny place to see if they can recover the cash and the coup plans. Needless to say Buono and his henchmen are not far behind. What the UNCLE agents find is a group of people doing whatever they can to get off the island. Everyone is broke. The local Count, Steven Geary, has two lovely daughters he needs to marry off but cannot afford a dowry. There is one cop on the island, Daniel J. Travanti, who thinks that the UNCLE agents are really smugglers. Throw in Michael Strong as the local tavern owner and we have the island bunch.

Now the THRUSH types arrive and the fun begins. THRUSH discovers that the cash and the coup plans did survive the plane crash. Steven Geary has found them and now wants to marry off one of his daughters to UNCLE agent, Vaughn. Policeman Travanti is in love with the other. Buono and his boys put the kibosh of this idea as they kidnap the whole group.

A bit of torture is about to be applied when McCallum manages an escape. Needless to say a bit of derring-do on his part soon salvages the situation. The THRUSH types are collected and placed under arrest by Travanti. The Count, Geary, gets to keep the cash and can now marry off his daughters. The two girls are played by, Marya Stevens and Brioni Farrell.

Victor Buono, made a career out of playing these types of tongue in cheek villains. Too bad the man died at age 43 as he had the Sydney Greenstreet type roles sewed up.

It might sound silly, and it is, but it keeps a smile on your face the entire time. The further the series seems to go, the more of a comic feel it gets.

Travanti would finally hit the big time as Captain Frank Furillo on the six season run of the classic Police drama, HILL STREET BLUES.
