Illya becomes a mummy!
ShadeGrenade23 May 2010
Warning: Spoilers
Having survived Alexander's death traps in Greece, Solo and Kuryakin head back to the States, where their quarry has joined forces with the Red Chinese, who want to take over an Asian state. At a high class gym known as 'The Grecian Urn', Solo has a run-in with the muscular Ingo ( Cal Bolder ). Illya traces the madman to a farm in Virginia, and is almost cut into pieces by farm implements, before being handed over to Kavon ( David Opatasho ) for mummification. Alexander is going to break 'Thou Shalt Not Kill' by murdering the Japanese President ( Teru Shimada, later to play 'Mr.Osatu in 'You Only Live Twice' ) at a function...

Not as good as the previous episode, mainly because the villain's master plan - sticking a knife in someone's chest - is mundane. One might have hoped he would have found an imaginative use for the B.G.3.0. will gas capsules. He does not. Kavon turning against Alexander at the end is a little contrived too.

Cal Bolder was the henchman in a later Season 2 episode - 'The Bridge Of Liona Affair'. He also played the monster in 'Jesse James Meets Frankenstein's Daughter' ( 1966 ).

There's a lovely moment as henchmen Parviz ( David Sheiner ) is fatally wounded by Illya before being driven off with a party of wedding guests. As someone realises he is dead, there is a scream. A well-wisher says to Illya: "I knew it wouldn't last!".

One of my favourite spy clichés - the taxi that knocks out its passenger with gas - surfaces here.

For 'One Spy Too Many', Yvonne 'Batgirl' Craig was added as Waverly's luscious niece 'Maude'. Gerald Fried's score for this episode is one of his best.

THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. – The Alexander the Greater Affair Pt 2– 1965

This is the 31st episode of 1964 to 1968 spy series, THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. The series ran for a total of 105 episodes. The first season was filmed in black and white with the remainder shot in colour. Robert Vaughn plays agent Napoleon Solo while David McCallum plays Illya Kuryakin. Leo G Carroll plays Mister Waverly, the boss of the secret agency known as U.N.C.L.E. (United Network Command for Law & Enforcement) Their main enemy is THRUSH, an organization out to take over the planet.

The first season of MAN FROM UNCLE was filmed in b/w, and all the better for it. This episode, the first of the second season blasts onto the screen with garish colour and a rather silly story. As a fan of the series, I was expecting more. This episode is Part Two of The Alexander the Greater story arc.

UNCLE gets involved with one of world's wealthiest men, Rip Torn. Torn steals several canisters of a US Army nerve gas. Torn plans on using the gas to help him take over the world. While doing so he intends to break all of the Ten Commandments. Also in the mix is Torn's ditsy ex-wife, Dorothy Provine. She is chasing Torn to try and get the divorce settlement papers signed.

UNCLE agents McCallum and Vaughn pursue Torn to Athens and around the Greek Islands before finally returning back to the States. There are bottomless pits, swinging blades and numerous underlings with murder on their minds here. It really does not work very well.

Part 2 starts up at a farm in Virginia. Torn plans on killing the leader of an East Asian country. Then he can use the country as a base of operations for his world domination plans. He also finds time to sleep with the wife of one of the Asian country's Princes. UNCLE, needless to say manages to foil Torn and his evil plans.

Every series hits a bump in the road and this story arc is one of them.
