High society hijinks
Mr-Fusion21 April 2016
'Of Sound Mind' is an episode full of levity when Magnum inherits the estate and $50 mil fortune of a deceased prankster, leaving three irate family members out in the cold. Turns out, the guy was murdered and the bequeathing is a retainer for Thomas' services. But you just know that that newfound wealth isn't permanent, so the big draw here is seeing how Magnum will end up back at square one.

The last episode I watched was possibly the series' darkest ('Did You See the Sun Rise?'), so a lighthearted affair was desirable. Not so much for Magnum being stranded on the floor in a suit of armor, but mostly for manservant Carlton. He had a good presence here, and his scenes with Selleck were the best.

Humorous Magnum
mm-3917 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Of Sound Mind is a humorous episode. There is a rich jerk who gives Magnum a rich inheritance of 50 million. There is high society, money grubbers, and a practical joker millionaire with no concerns with others for comedy gold. The banter with the family and rich crowd with the out of fish Magnum is hilarious. T C and Rick suck up so bad to Magnum is also funny. The part where Magnum with a broke leg tries to chase someone in a armor suit is the best. Well a haunted house, and a mystery keeps the viewer watching. The ending is fitting. I like Of Sound Mind and would be in top 5.

Maybe my favorite episode

Warning: Spoilers
This specific episode is most certainly my favorite. In a nutshell, it was the costumes at the party that did it for me.Just loved it, as well as the outline of the plot. The will, the estate, the clever schemes of Wilson, a typical cheap-skate using money like the carrot and the stick.Roscoe Lee Browne was very, very good in this. But the best part was the costume party and the mystery.

The house, the antiques, the greedy,left-out family heirs, the plotting, scheming, all of that was fit in so nicely in this episode. The conclusion was poetic justice at its finest, just dazzling and highly well thought-out for a TV Series. But it's all about that delightful costume party to me.

Pitts Special engine Start
wajmm6 March 2008
As usual, this episode was an excellent example of the Magnum genre. I had seen the series in my younger days, and replays on cable renewed my interest and appreciation for this excellent series. It is a gem in our television treasure troth!

As the former owner of a 1946 Aeronca Chief Prop Start airplane, I watched closely when the Pitts Special used in the opening flight sequence was started. A fellow pulled the prop as if to "prop start" the engine, then there was the distinct sound of an a starter engaging and the engine starting. In other words, it looks like the prop start part was either for effect or there was a mag problem with the engine where it required a pull through for the starter to engage. Did anyone else notice this??

A fun episode

Warning: Spoilers
Of Sound Mind really is a fun episode of Magnum, P. I., with Magnum inheriting millions of dollars after the death of a wealthy guy, or did he die? Well, well, well, we see the twist at the end that would have made M. Night Shyamalan proud and who knows, maybe it inspired him when he made The Sixth Sense.

Anyway, there's lots of hi-jinks in this episode, especially with the costume party. Roscoe Lee Browne, who over a decade later became the narrator in Babe, guest stars in Of Sound Mind, and he does a pretty decent job of it. I'm enjoying watching the early seasons of Magnum, P. I. and also Father Brown and Law and Order.
