'Mad Buck Gibson' offers a nice change of pace, in that there's not really a case this week. Instead, Magnum is tasked with watching over a daredevil adventure novelist who's out to defy death at every turn. And I knew I was in for a treat when I saw the guest star. Darren McGavin is one of my favorite character actors and he infuses the show with larger-than-life personality. And when the heavy plot twist comes along, well he handles that beautifully, too.

I enjoyed this one quite a bit. It's a lot of fun, hits on our human weaknesses and somehow brims with life.

Left me with a genuine smile on my face.

And now for something completely different...

Rather than the normal detective caper, "Mad Buck Gibson" is very much a character driven piece.

Darren McGavin plays the titular role - an intrepid and somewhat reckless individual who, like Robin Masters, is a bestselling novelist.

The truly beautiful Vera Miles plays Gibson's first wife, Joan.

Great performances by all.

Watching this episode, I realised there's rarely a week when one of the main characters isn't bruised, cut, shot or otherwise injured. It's a perilous occupation hanging out with TM.

8 out of 10. A bitter sweet instalment.

I liked this one!

Warning: Spoilers
Mad Buck Gibson is like George Pimpton writing about adventures Gibson does. There is a concern someone is trying to hurt Buck or Buck hurts himself. Magnum must baby sit Buck which Magnum hates. Car cashes and paragliding and parachuting before extreme sports became known. Well Buck ends with a big bang. As the adventure continues on a larger than life ways.

Warning: Spoilers
When I saw this episode title, well glanced at it, I thought it read Mad Mel Gibson, but no, it's Mad Buck Gibson, so I need my eyes tested again.

Anyway, two big stars guest star in Mad Buck Gibson. Vera Miles of Psycho fame as Joan Gibson. And then we have Darren McGavin of Night Stalker fame as Buck Gibson who is kind of crazy but is vulnerable about life issues.

The hang gliding denouement for this episode was very moving and I really wanted to know what happened to Buck. Did he return or what, I don't know.

Anyway, there's much human injury in this episode, so that's Magnum, P. I. for you.

growing old

An old friend of Robins drops by literally, hitting Higgins on a beach landing.Obvious that Buck and Higgins don't get along. This is a great chance for Magnum to hit Higgins up for the tennis court, the wine cellar, and possibly half the Estate to babysit Buck. The only person that comes close to putting a handle on Buck is his estranged wife who happens to be visiting the island. His wife also knows Bucks secret. The secret is revealed during a phone call Buck makes.Buck is quite a character getting into mischief befitting a youthful teen discovering his abilities as well as inabilities.Anyway this is a story about a middle aged man growing old,not so gracefully.Creating unique problems for Magnum and the gang.
