Mike Hammer meets Magnum!
mm-395 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Computer Date is a hard edge Mike Hammer style story, with a humorous side story with Higs. Magnum is hit by two cases there is theft at a computer firm, and a affair case. The computer theft and a conflict of interest with a domestic case forces Magnum to drop both cases. The viewer experiences friends Rick, Higgens and how Magnum handles the others characters. One sees how hot headed the Rick character is and Higgens can be loyal but there is the humor edge as Magnum creates an exercise programs for Higs. Like a Mike Hammer episode there is an evil twist by an evil man. Computer Date climax is a a dark side Magnum but is balanced with a hilarious ending. 9 stars.

Electric dreams

Warning: Spoilers
In Computer Date, Nancy DeCarl, who plays Claudia Randolph, is Larry Manetti's wife in real life.

Anyway, the early 80s were the heady days of personal computers, with wide floppy disks (or discs) and mainframes and green text on screen. Anyway, Charles Aidman guest stars and a few years later he became the narrator for the first Twilight Zone revival.

Computer Date is quaint with the computer technology of the early 80s, and we see Rick dating Claudia, who is married to Charles Aidman's character. I'm enjoying catching up on the early seasons of Magnum, P. I. and also Father Brown for daytime viewing.

A solid, well rounded episode
DVD_Connoisseur3 November 2018
"Computer Date" is a thoroughly entertaining episode from Season 2. There's a lot to like and never a dull moment.

Magnum is deep into an investigation of financial misconduct at a large company when he's asked to look into a top-ranking manager's wife's activities. He's uncomfortable to discover she appears to be having an affair with Rick and has to cope with the resulting fallout.

Added to this, Higgins has an impending reunion with his old flame, Lady Ashley, and asks Magnum to work him into shape before they meet.

The icing on the cake is Mac doing something other than leafing through paperwork in his naval environment. Great to see him actively on a case with Thomas.

10 out of 10. Genuinely entertaining, this is one of my favourite episodes from the second season.

Shady Rick
polite-4569211 June 2019
Warning: Spoilers
After only two weeks pursuing a married woman, then being rejected, Rick says: "You can't just throw away everything we've had" and insists he loves her and tries to enforce an ultimatum for her to decide between him and her husband.

Not only is Rick scummy for putting all his hopes in "loving" a married woman he barely knows, but he also decides (temporarily) to end his long-time friendship with Magnum.

Aside from that, Higgins' work to prepare for meeting his old friend is amusing (especially because it is followed up by meeting her much younger "traveling companion").

Weird out of character episode
lbowdls22 October 2019
This episode plays like an episode they did even before the pilot. Higgins acts different - he even smokes - never seen him do that ever before or since and Rick over acts even more than usual. Some interesting aspects but overall it's off kilter and strange.

Slick Rick

The most notable aspect for me in this episode is how sleazy and mean Rick is, especially to Magnum, who's really not at fault. I just found out that Larry Manetti(Rick)is actually married to the woman named Claudia Randolph, who he has an affair with. Her real name is Nancy DeCarl, and they've been married since 1980. Small world, isn't it? The other familiar faces include Charles Aidman, and Jeff MacKay, who plays the quirky "Mac", as Magnum once again enlists his help on this current case. Consider Magnum's surprise when he spots Rick as the man whom the married woman is having an affair with; Magnum was hired by a suspecting husband to "spy" on his wife, although he quits the job after he discovers it's Rick involved. When Rick finds out, he acts like a jerk, and probably slightly unrealistic, considering the years they've been friends. After the dust finally settles by the end, I would've liked if he apologized to Magnum, and even though he never did on camera, we can assume he did by the way they were back to their old selves again. This has a nice two tier story going on, maybe a third, if you consider Higgin's old flame stopping by the estate, and it's funny watching him try to get in shape. Finally, look for a cool Porsche 928 during a car chase.
