No Excuse for Trash Like This

OMG this has to be one of the WORST episodes of The Lucy Show - it's definitely the worst of the Danfield era. Ironic, since it was the first color episode - you'd think they would want to make something special to mark the landmark occasion. How Lucille Ball, legendary control freak, could keep approving substandard scripts like this, just boggles the mind. Desi, oh Desi, your keen eye for quality is so badly missed this season as the series takes a huge nosedive that is noticeable from the start.

Obviously, this was meant to be a topical episode in wake of the big-screen release of Liz Taylor's CLEOPATRA but trendy subject matter does not a great episode make, and there is no excuse for trash like this. The final scene is downright embarrassing for all involved, but especially Vivian. It has to be the stupidest ending of any Lucy episode ever.

I'm rating this two stars because the ladies all look great in their top-hat-and-tails outfits in the opening scene (Lucy has the best gams of all of them and I wonder if this is where they got the inspiration for the Here's Lucy puppet in 1968) and in the final scene she does look very striking in her Cleopatra costume. It was a no-brainer to have her play the lead in the show-within-a-show because none of the other ladies could have looked so fabulous.

Still, this is scraping the bottom of the barrel.
