Max Terhune: The first famous ventriloquist
jwpeel-15 June 2017
This is a Lone Ranger western I love the most, because it is the ONLY one where the star of the episode is Max Terhune, the star of many of The Three Mesquiteers or The Range Busters.

I'll be honest with you, the story isn't as important as Max working along with Clayton Moore the ONLY man on this series who was right to play the man in the Mask of the Lone Ranger.

It even looks as though Clayton Moore and Jay Silverheels or truly enjoying themselves.

In fact, Terhune tries to teach Tonto how to be a ventriloquist but doesn't succeed.

It's ALMOST as good as the episode where our heroes play clowns and beat the bad guys.

Max and Elmer

Judge Jordan and legendary sheriff Roberts of Kingsville are watching ventriloquist Sidney Boswell and his dummy Elmer in the balcony when henchman Hatch enters the balcony and shoots Sheriff Roberts dead from behind. It was similar to the murder of President Lincoln by John Wilkes Booth. Only Boswell can identify the killer. Little does anyone know that dishonest Deputy Craig orchestrated the killing so that he could become sheriff and rule the town. Boswell flees town in his wagon but Craig sends Hatch and his other henchman, Al, to kill the witness. But The Ranger and Tonto intervene. It's going to be a tough job to protect Boswell since our heroes don't know that Craig is behind all the evilness.

The great talent Max Terhune plays Boswell, essentially the same character he played in numerous western movies. His dummy Elmer plays himself. Max was not only a ventriloquist, but could also do animal impressions and was a talented magician. His specialty was card tricks. His hands doubled Clark Gable's for the fancy dealing done in the 1956 western, "The King and Four Queens"

This is one of the best LR episodes, and Max Terhune and Elmer make it so.
