Mary Ingalls : Pa sent us over to see how you're doing.
Dr. Hiram Baker : I'm doing just fine.
Mary Ingalls : Well, if you want my honest opinion... you're not.
Dr. Hiram Baker : If you want mine, you're absolutely right.
-
Dr. Hiram Baker : Can't you understand? I'm not a doctor anymore!
Charles Ingalls : Well, if you aren't a doctor, what are you? You're not a farmer, we know that.
-
Mary Ingalls : You know, we sure miss you. Especially when we need a doctor.
Dr. Hiram Baker : Who needed treatment and didn't get it?
Mary Ingalls : Well... Carrie, for instance.
Dr. Hiram Baker : Carrie? What's wrong with Carrie?
Mary Ingalls : She's got this pain in her middle...
Dr. Hiram Baker : [runs to Carrie and kneels down in front of her] Carrie, what kind of pain is it? Is it sharp?
Mary Ingalls : Yeah. Sometimes it is.
Dr. Hiram Baker : Does it stay in one place?
Mary Ingalls : No. It seems to move around. It moves from here... to here... to here... to here...
Dr. Hiram Baker : Let Carrie answer.
Mary Ingalls : Yes sir.
Dr. Hiram Baker : Where does it hurt, Carrie?
Carrie Ingalls : It doesn't.
Mary Ingalls : She did have a stomach ache last week...
Dr. Hiram Baker : Mary, you're going to have to understand something: I've retired. Now, I might be the worst farmer in the county, but that's all I am. Thanks for your concern.

Dr. Hiram Baker : [packing up his office as Dr. Logan moves his things in] I brought all the patients' records up to date. Complete histories, medications, prognoses, it's all there.
Dr. Asa T. Logan : Is there much to do around here?
Dr. Hiram Baker : There's plenty of work, don't worry about that.
Dr. Asa T. Logan : Actually, I was referring to the social life.
Dr. Hiram Baker : Oh. Well, there's the usual church socials, some dances, that sort of thing.
Dr. Asa T. Logan : How's the hunting?
Dr. Hiram Baker : If you can find the time, there's plenty of game. There's one patient I'm particularly concerned about: Mrs. Novack. I'd like you to drive out there and see her as soon as you can; she's expecting.
Dr. Asa T. Logan : [examining the hunting rifle he just removed from its casing] Remember, Doctor, you're retired.
Dr. Hiram Baker : Of course. But she's already lost two babies.
Dr. Asa T. Logan : Thank you, Doctor. I'll keep an eye on her.
Dr. Hiram Baker : Well, I guess that's it. Except to say goodbye and good luck.
[retrieves his hat]
Dr. Asa T. Logan : Aren't you taking any of this with you?
Dr. Hiram Baker : It's all yours now, Doctor.
Dr. Asa T. Logan : Except this, of course.
[retrieves Dr. Baker's medical bag]
Dr. Asa T. Logan : A doctor's bag, after all, is as personal as his clothing.
Dr. Hiram Baker : Or his conscience.
[takes the bag and exits his now-former office, stopping to remove the "H. Baker, M.D." sign from the outside wall]
