Charles and Caroline's last child was a daughter, Grace Pearl (Ingalls) Dow. She was born on May 23, 1877 in Burr Oak, Iowa. She married Nathaniel William Dow on October 16, 1901. She died on November 10, 1941 in Kingsbury, South Dakota. She worked as a school teacher and was also a farmer.
Caroline pays a dime to the fortune teller to predict her baby's gender, and later tells Charles that "it was only 10 cents". This is more 1970's speak than 1870's, since the purchasing power of a dime was so much more. In the past, they weren't able to afford a doll that cost a dollar, and people were paid barely $1 per day back then, and her eggs only yield her 45 cents when sold to Mrs. Oleson, and one could rent a hotel room for $4 a week. So it was a lot of money to waste on a fortune teller.
Laura is surprised that Madam Maria knows that one of the Ingalls children died, but if she paid attention she would realize she told Madam Maria herself. She said there were two more Ingalls children at home, then she said her mother was pregnant with her fifth child. If all of the children had survived, there would be three other children besides Laura, not two.
Miss Beadle addressed as Mrs. Simms. And this will be the final time she teaches class.
When Bandit steals part of the fortune teller's breakfast, Laura tells her that the dog never done that before. However, the first time Charles saw Bandit, he was stealing food then joined Charles on wagon ride home to Walnut Grove.
