When it comes to basketball, Beaver is great with baseball
pensman9 May 2017
Warning: Spoilers
The City Park Leagues are starting and Ward and Wally want Beaver to try out. Everyone has great expectations for Beaver, his brother took the team to the championship. Ward is so happy that Beaver's going out for the team he takes Beaver, "the old pro," out for a new pair of basketball shoes.

Eddie comes over for the evening to see Wally. Actually, to steal Wally's math answers. After Eddie gives Beaver the business about Beaver not being able to play basketball, Wally chases him out. But what if he's right for once. Turns out Eddie was right. Beaver's good for baseball and football, but basketball isn't his game. Beaver is cut.

Beaver walks in the door to a hero's welcome. Ward yells out the varsity is home. And Wally says he has already told his coach about his star little brother. Wally says the coach said to tell Beaver not to worry, they will make room for new trophies. Beaver doesn't know what to do. Every time he tries to say something he isn't given a chance.

Beaver watches the other boys at practice, but when he comes home from school he continues the lie. Eventually Ward finds out the truth when he drives by the practice and Beaver isn't there. Mr. Doyle, the coach, tells Ward Beaver was dropped. The news is upsetting but more so because Fred Rutherford was there. Wally finds Beaver in the garage trying to get his sneakers dirty so it will look like he was playing. Beaver is worried Ward will be angry that Beaver is a flop as a basketball player. Wally tells Beaver he will have to tell their dad the truth; he even coaches Beaver on what to say. Wally even offers to try and smooth things over. He tells Ward that Beaver is scared to death because he just doesn't want his dad to know he's crummy. That is, Beaver is crummy at basketball; Ward isn't crummy at all.

Beaver walks in on the conversation. He was eavesdropping to see how much trouble he's in. Actually none. Ward assures him no one expects him to be a carbon copy of Wally. Beaver will find out as he grows up what he's good at and what he can't do. If anyone is disappointed, it's likely Ward, by now his boys should know they can always come to him. We agree.

And at the very end of the episode is a nice little twist to a game of checkers.

THE NOT SO GOOD BASKETBALL HERO.
tcchelsey25 February 2024
Poor Beave is put into one of those awk-weird teen moments, and yes, many of us could relate to it.

It's all about following in your older brother's footsteps, the good thing is that Wally is a cool brother.

The subject is basketball, and since Wally is a star player, its suggested --especially by Ward-- that Beave try out for the City Park team. And Beave tries... but he just can't keep up with the rest of the team. To make matters more complicated, egotistical, know it all Fred Rutherford (Richard Deacon) is watching! OMG.

One of the best scenes is Beaver trying to dirty up his sneakers, to make it look like he's playing hardball. Thanks to writer Dick Conway, that had to have come from a real life experience as a lot of us kids pulled stunts like that. The dirtier the shoe the more adventurous you were.

Popular character actor Russ Conway (no relation to Dick Conway) plays the Mr. Doyle. This was the only episode he appeared in, turning up more in cop shows and westerns at Warner Brothers/ABC tv. He later guested on MANNIX and MISSION IMPOSSIBLE in some good dramatic roles.

Eddie Haskell has some funny one-liners in this one and Ward is, as always, the best tv dad.

See this for the memories. SEASON 5 EPISODE 28 remastered.

Life in the shadow of the older brother
AlsExGal23 March 2024
At his father's urging, Beaver tries out for the city park basketball team. With Ward praising Wally's athleticism, Beaver feels pressure to excel. He's therefore afraid to tell his parents when he is cut from the team - by mutual agreement with the coach - after the first day of practice. He pretends to go to practice for a week to keep up the charade. But then Ward comes by to see him practice, talks to the coach, and finds out the truth. And to make it worse, Ward finds this out in the presence of obnoxious blow-hard Fred Rutherford. How will Ward react when he confronts Beaver about this? Watch and find out.

This show put lots of emphasis on Wally's athleticism, although I have to say that whenever Wally is shown in his room, he seems to always be doing homework. Beaver, although portrayed as somebody who is not very athletic, does not seem to be scholastically gifted either. At least, he doesn't seem to work hard at scholastic pursuits. I guess Beaver is supposed to be the "Every Man" in most situations.

Liar, liar, pants on fire Beaver Cleaver
LukeCoolHand9 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
OK in my last review I complained about Beaver's proverbial lying. In this episode Beaver gets cut from the basketball team and keeps the fact from his parents because he thinks they will jump on him. Beaver has very understanding parents but the script of beaver thinking his parents are "monsters' Is getting very old. Same old same old over and over and over again.

This show really needed new writers. Before long Beaver will start to believe his own lies and cannot quit lying, even into adult hood. I have seen this happen in real life too. Im really afraid kids watching this show might start to thinking lying is OK. It is definitely bad and not funny at all.

Beaver Can't Live Up To Wally's Reputation
StrictlyConfidential23 December 2020
(*Ward to Beaver quote*) - "Well, can't you mess around some other time?"

Through Ward's enthusiastic coaxing, Beaver decides to try out for the City Park basketball team.

After being coached by Mr. Doyle, Beaver finds out that he just hasn't got what it takes to play the game and so he admits defeat and continues on with his other interests.

Beaver played basketball previous episodes
vitoscotti25 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
A throw away script. A rehash of Beaver failing at, or losing something then keeping it from his family, hiding out til supper. Done numerous times. Where's the previously seen family basketball hoop Beaver played at earlier. Now he's new to basketball?
