- Hank Katts has just graduated from Police Academy and is assigned to the K-9 Corps. He refuses to work there because he wants and "human partner". Later he gets a call to retrieve a dog, where he meets his new K-9 partner, Rudy/Rinty.
- At the beginning of this episode, we see Hank katts just finishing up his Police Academy training. He is a by the books kind of guy and takes police theory very seriously. He reads various theory books, which he plans on using on the job.
Upon graduation, Hank hopes for a job in homicide or vice, but he never expects to be assigned to work for the K-9 corps! Upon discovering this hidious news, Hank runs straight to his academy sargent and complains. He thought he deserved better because he graduated number one in his class. The sergant simply told him that someday he would be a great cop. "You rely too much on your head and instead on your gut instinct!" But Hank continued to insist on a human partner - not a dog. The Sergant's decision was final, however.
So, off to K-9 traning Hank went. Hank had trouble teaching a dog to do what he asked. He didn't seem to understand how to give the dog simple commands. Like his Police Academy sergant said, part of his problem was he liked to talk. So the K-9 officers laughed as he tried to carry on an intelligent conversation with his trianing dog as he explained what he wanted the dog to do. Hank was getting frustrated.
One day, he went in to talk to the K-9 police captain Murdoch and informed him he wasn't suited for the K-9 corps. The Captain agreed with him, but figured he was stuck with him rather he liked it or not. He gave Hank a short lecture on the benefits of having a dog for a partner (see quotes), then he told him to go pick up his dog.
When Hank got to the place his new partner was currently at, he found a german shephered with green paint all over him barking fierecly at an old man on a ladder. Hank managed to get the dog in the car. The dog's name was Rudy. But when Hank tried to get in the car, Rudy made it clear he wasn't going to allow that! So Hank calls a tow truck to tow his car to the pound.
Hank has a change of heart, however, when the men from the pound announce what will happen to Rudy. He wants one more chance to have a heart-to-heart talk, and explains to Rudy that not only will he be in trouble if he goes back to K9 without him, but Rudy's life was in danger if he didn't cooperate. His gentle voice and kind lecture seemed to help the dog. Rudy allowed Hank to get in his car. After that, it was true love for man and beast!
Rudy does great on the training. He and Hank work well together. In no time, they become best friends. Hank takes Rudy everywhere with him - even to the supermarket where he brags on the benefits of having a dog for a partner. As Hank takes his groceries out to the car, two men appear and act friendly. Rudy barks at them, but Hank just tells Rudy to calm down, then leaves the keys in his trunk, his trunk open, and goes back in to get the rest of his groceries. When he comes back outside, his white mustang is driving down the road, and he orders Rudy to go after it. But the car is gone.
Hank takes a cab home only to realize he is locked out of his house - the car thieves have his keys! As he approaches the front steps of his house, he finds Maggie Davenport and her son, Stevie sitting there waiting for him. Maggie was married to his brother, Fred, who was a cop killed in the line of duty. Maggie reports that they would only staying there for a few days. She had a possible acting job in the area. Stevie had a lot of trouble dealing with his father's death and had gotten in a lot of trouble at school. Hank reluctantly agreed to let them stay there for awhile.
The next day, when Hank tells Captain Murdoch what happened, he gets mad. Hank's gun was in the trunk of his car. The Captain tells him to stay out of police business until he's certified. He understands, but as soon as he leaves he goes to fellow police officer Ron for help, but Ron says no.
To add to his problems, Rudy seems to have a fear of heights. He cannot be certified unless he gets over it.
Hank's house is in shambles. Maggie's job fell through, but she promises to be out of his hair before long.
Hank's luck turns when Ron shows up that night with a list of fences for every car and car parts in the metro area. Now he has something to go on. The list pays off and Hank is able to track down the car and the men who stole it. A police chanse on foot occurs. Rudy chases one man, causing him to fall off the ledge. Hank isn't so lucky. His man runs up to the roof. The man jumps to another building and Hank follows. When Rudy gets there, he bravely takes the leap in order to save Hank, who has a gun on him. Hank is able to arrest both men and get his car back. He finally understands the value of having a dog for a partner.
The Captain is furious, to say the least, but he announces to Hank that he and Rudy are both certified. They are now full-fledged members of the K-9 core.
When Hank gets home, Maggie and Stevie are all packed. Stevie is excited to see his dad's mustang safe and sound - and painted red! Hank asks Maggie where they are going. She announces they are going to Georgetown. She had a job offer there and would stay with a friend until they find a place to live. The schools were good.
It's then that Hank descovers he doesn't want his new family to leave. He wants Maggie and Stevie to live with him. He informs her that the schools there are good. Maggie only smiles at him, and it's understood that she and Stevie would be moving in for good. Stevie utters, "Yes!"
