In 1980 two police shows were launched on British television featuring women in promoted roles in the police force. Both Juliet Bravo and The Gentle Touch would highlight the prejudice the women would face in the police force from male colleagues.
Juliet Bravo focusses on newly promoted Inspector Jean Darblay (Stephanie Turner) in a small Lancashire town of Hartley. Her station officers have been taken by surprise at this turn of events. Sergeant Joseph Beck does not think she might be up to the job.
In the first episode, a father on the edge has abducted his daughter (Joanne Whalley in an early role) with a shotgun. They have been living rough, his daughter is not well. When confronted by the police the father gets violent.
Ian Kennedy Martin created the series, he also created The Sweeney. Despite being shown in the early evenings on Saturdays and set in a small Lancashire town. The first episode is a lot grittier and violent than I expected it to be. Darblay's husband is unemployed to mirror the rising unemployment figures in Britain at the time.
