Kevin Whately plays young policeman Chris Evans. A policeman we have not seen so far at Hartley police station and we suspect will not again after this episode.

Evans is a unhappy soul, he drinks too much because the woman he has been with Judy Grainger has cooled off their relationship.

Judy's husband is returning home from prison. He was involved in an armed robbery and has been paroled mainly due to his ill health.

Evans is unhappy about this as he expected Judy to run away with him. Sergeant Joseph Beck is unhappy as Grainger injured a colleague of his when he was involved in the armed robbery.

Inspector Jean Darblay is not happy because Judy's employer a prospective Liberal election candidate for the council tells her that Grainger's wife is scared that her husband is returning home.

The most scared person is Grainger, confused as to the circumstances he has landed himself into. I think he suspects his wife might have had someone while he was inside.

Beck had told the Job Centre staff to find out if Grainger had come around looking for a job. It seemed rather silly, there were over 2 million unemployed people at the time. Industries in east Lancashire were being shut. What chance did an ex-con have?

I did find Darbley's behaviour odd in this episode. Beck was almost acting like he was Charles Bronson. Poor Evans, I think he had no business being in the police in the first place.
