Joey and the Dream Girl: Part 1 (#1.8)
ComedyFan20108 October 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Gina's friend comes to visit her. Joey had a crush on her when young. And she is going through a divorce. Joey promises Gina not to date her now that she is in a fragile state. But Donna hits on Joey and they hook up, he promises Gina he is really into her. Turns out though that Donna's husband called and wants her back.

Why would they make this kind of story a 2 part episode? It is not that exciting at all, one could totally make the whole thing in 20 minutes, well maybe I will change my mind after seeing the second part. I do hope though that Donna goes back to her husband, she seems a bit annoying to me.

One of the criticisms aimed at 'Joey' (many often unfairly) is that the title character fell in love a bit too easily across the two series, having only fallen once in ten years of 'Friends'.

It is however a nice way of developing the character, which of course was the aim of this spin-off in the first place. Here he falls for his high school crush, who turns up again to visit Gina when her marriage hits the rocks.

I thought Matt Le Blanc was great here (again in every scene!), and carried off the romantic elements of the episodes well. The character is a little smarter here, and it pays off.

There are however some examples of jokes that are unworthy of the character, lazy jokes that diminish him, and the blame for that has to be placed at the producers door sadly.

The 'Michael was good at sports as a kid' story line also had its moments, with Paulo Costanzo proving what a good actor he is.

A nice start to the two parter.
