This pilot episode of In The Heat Of The Night has Virgil Tibbs and wife Althea
returning to Sparta, Mississippi for the funeral of his mother. While there Howard
Rollins listens to a proposition from Mayor Dennis Lipscomb of employment
as the Sparta, PD as a detective.
Although Carroll O'Connor has a respect for Rollins's professionalism he's less than enthusiastic about having him forced on the force. This will also officially integrate Sparta's Police Department, a fact that escapes no one's attention.
Just in time to because there is a new murder on their hands and then the kid they were holding on suspicion is also found hung in the Sparta jail.
Rollins has a rocky start getting along with some of Sparta's finest. Especially true of Alan Autry.
A good start for the series.
