- Hondo befriends an Apache prince just as Fort Lowell is visited by a martinet Cavalry general whose by-the-book and show-them-no-mercy approach to the Indians threatens to upend the fragile friendship and peace forged by Hondo.
- While watching a beautiful stallion being tracked by two white horse traders Hondo witnesses an Apche brave appear hidden buried from beneath dirt and shrubs catch the stallion before the two white horse traders. Still out of sight of the three men Hondo stopped the two from taking prized horse from the young brave. The brave then gives Hondo the stallion as a gift. Once returning to the fort with the horse Hondo finds a visiting General from Washington who was known as the Book General. After a fight involving Hondo, the Apache, and the two hoese traders this General orders that the Apache is whipped because he was thrown into him as the fight ended, stating that the Indian attacked him. Hondo attempted to talk the General out of the punishment but he carried through while six of his braves watched. Later while out looking for locations for new outpost the squad led by the General and Hondo are surrounded by the Apache and they demanded that to spare the lives of the remainder of the asquad that the General surrender to be equally punished as the Apache had been. After a showing of compassion but a little humility the General is released but in his anger and pride the General orders that the Apache be attacked. Before launching his attack the General has a change of heart.—Donald Pendleton
