Hancock's Half Hour

In the early part of this show Sid James uses the word "jellied" in a way that I have never heard before or since. He says something like "You can't keep doing the same old thing, it was only a matter of time before the public jellied to you" - this because he is trying to persuade Hancock to star in his ultra-low budget Vikings drama.
I assume "Jellied" is cockney rhyming slang - but for what? The most obvioous thing "Jellied Eels" doesnt make sense here. Anyone know?
