Ransom of Blue Chief
zsenorsock22 May 2008
Warning: Spoilers
Another witty script by Stan Burns and Mike Marmer begins with KAOS kidnapping the Chief while Max tunes his car. Max has no idea the Chief is fighting with two KAOS agents and mistakes gunfire for the car backfiring. (The scene is only slightly hurt by the fact what is obviously a studio office building stands in for the Chief's apartment house.) Harvey Satan (Joseph Sirola, full of menace) wants $200,000 ransom for the Chief. CONTROL doesn't have that kind of money so Max calls the President, who pledges $12. Encouraged, Max and 99 begin a fund raiser to free the Chief. Sadly the biggest contribution is $500 "from the boys in counterfeiting".

Satan has called for Dr. Lazlo Von Havok to operate on the Chief so he will be under KAOS power. Fortunately Max and 99 intercept the doctor and his nurse, impersonate them and attempt to free their frozen Chief, who Satan has literally put on ice.

Besides the great script (which is not only funny but presents a sense of real jeopardy), we get good performances all around, beginning with Sirola and his henchman Rudolph (Len Lesser, familiar to "Seinfeld" fans as Uncle Leo). Besides being funny, the writers once again allow Max to come up with a great idea in the end to save the Chief, showing Max may be a bumbler, but occasionally he's pretty good at what he does.

In the end of course the Chief is saved, but he's disappointed to find out they were not able to raise all of the $200,000...would you believe $100,000? How about $600?
