The backstory behind the cradle is that it was on the Titanic when it sank, and nearly handed to a lifeboat after a sinking, but when the people in the lifeboat refused to take the baby (not sure why; unless everyone was standing up packed shoulder to shoulder, which isn't really possible in an old-time lifeboat, the baby could easily fit in someone's lap) the lifeboat sank but the cradle didn't. However, no lifeboats from the Titanic sank after being launched (despite some close calls).
