Out of the blue, Jack and Ryan arrive in the ship and steal the lantern, and are chased by Jonah and Tom. - A diver, David Jones, dives on a sunken ship. His partner, Jonah Harkness, stays on the boat above and trains the light from an antique lantern on the water, leading David to the ship. Jonah shutters the lamp when David comes up and tells Jonah that he was right about the ship being there. The two men haul up a crate from the ship with the aid of their partner, Tom, and take it to their dock ashore. They take it to their ship and set it on a table.
Ryan and Jack slip and spot the three men, looking for the lantern. Jonah sends David to batten down the hatches while Jonah and David cut open the chest with an acetylene torch. There is millions of dollars worth of treasure inside, and Jonah trains the lantern on David and unshutters it. A beam shoots out and sets David on fire, killing him. Ryan and Jack hear David's screams, run in, and Ryan wrestles with Jonah while Jack grabs the lantern.
David hears the commotion and comes in, forcing Jack to retreat. When David swings at Jack, he ducks and David hits Jonah as he comes over. Ryan tackles David as he comes at Jack, and the two men run out with the lantern. David grabs Jack's leg, and Ryan kicks him loose and leaves with Jack and the lantern. They get in their car and drive away, but not before Jonah sees their license plate.
Back at Curious Goods, Jack and Ryan tell Micki what happened. A storm is coming up outside, and Jack says that the astrologers' convention they're going to is the only time it will be in town for years, so they have to go out. Micki isn't interested in going, and the two men go to their car while Jonah and Tom secretly watch them from across the street.
Hearing the bell on the door ring, Micki answers it but there's no one there. She makes sure the door is locked while Jonah calls the store from a payphone and Micki answers. Jonah doesn't say anything and hangs up, and he tells Tom that there's still someone there. However, he insists that they're going in and getting the lantern back no matter what it takes. Tom overheard Jack mention the vault, and Jonah remembers the vault from when he bought the lantern from Lewis.
Micki is securing items in the shop from the coming storm, and the phone rings. It's the neighbor Jenny, who asks Micki if she would watch her son Richie. Micki readily agrees.
As Jonah and Tom discuss how to get into the shop, a telephone lineman pulls up in his truck. Jonah sees him and gets an idea.
Micki is securing items when she hears a report on the radio that the storm has been upgraded to a hurricane.
Jonah and Tom strangle the lineman, after Jonah claims that he lives in the building where the store is.
Ryan calls Micki and tells her that he and Jack can't get back because of the storm, and they won't be back until morning. Once Micki hangs up, outside Jonah cuts the phone line. Meanwhile, Ryan goes back to the car and tells Jack what Micki said. Jack suggests that they continue on to the convention, and they drive on.
Jonah and Tom, posing as linemen, knock at the door of the store. Micki answers, and they say that they got a report that the line was down. They have her check it and thanks to their sabotage, the line is down. Tom locks the door behind them, and Jonah suggests that they check the master box in the basement. As the two men go downstairs, Jenny arrives with Richie. Richie sullenly insists that he won't have any fun there, and Jenny leaves to check on her sister in labor.
Once Jenny leaves, Richie slips away when Micki isn't looking. He jumps out from behind a counter wearing a mask to startle Micki, and he asks to read some of Ryan's comic books. Micki readily agrees.
Downstairs, Jonah and Tom try to find a way into the vault. They go to work with the acetylene torch they brought with them.
Micki gives Richie some cookies and goes upstairs to check the windows.
The two men try and cut through the metal door but the torch won't go through. Tom knocks over some tools, and Richie hears them. Jonah goes to work on the hinges, and Richie comes downstairs to investigate. He asks what they're doing, and Jonah claims that they're fixing the phone. The boy knows they shouldn't be fooling with the vault, and Jonah repeats their claim that they're from the phone company. He asks the boy to help them, but Richie says that he's not allowed near the vault. When Richie goes to tell Micki, Jonah grabs him by the collar.
Micki comes back downstairs and calls to Richie, but gets no answer. She figures that he's hiding again, and Richie yells for help before Tom can cover his mouth. Micki comes downstairs to investigate, while Tom ties and gags Richie.
Officer Kennedy is driving by and spots the abandoned lineman truck.
Jonah tells Micki that he wants the lantern, and Micki feigns ignorance. He demands that she show them how to get into the vault, and Micki claims that she doesn't know. Jonah threatens to burn her skin with a match if she doesn't talk He sets the tip of her fair on fire, and she agrees to tell him. Micki says that she doesn't remember the secret entry the vault, and the instructions are written in the manifest. She offers to show him, and Jonah takes her upstairs.
Kennedy finds the severed line.
Jonah doesn't find the instructions in the manifest and grabs Micki when she tries to hit him with a bookend.
Kennedy goes back to the truck and finds the lineman's body stuffed into a compartment. He goes to the store and knocks at the front door. Jonah sends Tom to check it out, and tells Micki to keep looking for the key brick that unlocks the vault door.
The officer calls through the door to Tom, saying that he's just there to make sure everything is okay and doesn't mention the body. Tom yells that everything is okay, and says that the telephones are working perfectly when Kennedy asks. Kennedy realizes that isn't possible given the severed phone line and that Tom is lying.
The vault door opens, and Jonah and Micki go inside.
Kennedy plays along with Tom's ruse, then bursts in and draws his gun. When Tom comes at him with his knife, Kennedy shoots him, and Micki and Jonah hear the shot. Jonah has Micki take Richie into the vault, grabs an antique axe, and closes the door trapping them inside. He then cuts the power to the lights, goes upstairs, and stabs Kennedy dead from behind. Jonah uses the axe to jam the front door shut and confirms that Tom is dead.
Micki sorts through the antiques in the vault, looking for the lantern. Jonah comes back downstairs and opens the vault door, and finds the lantern sitting in the middle of the vault. Micki hits him over the head from behind, grabs the lantern, and runs upstairs with Richie. Jonah recovers and goes after them, and they try to get out but discover the door is jammed. They can't get the axe out, and Micki puts down the lantern and tells Richie to go upstairs.
As Jonah arrives, Micki goes back for the lantern and runs upstairs. Jonah goes up after them, and Micki barricades the door to her bedroom. She then pulls an electrical cord from a lamp and attaches it to the lantern. Micki has Richie plug the other end into a wall outlet, and when Jonah breaks in he goes for the lantern. Jonah collapses, shocked, and Micki has Richie pull the plug. She grabs the lantern and they step over Jonah's body. Jonah grabs Micki's leg, and she tells Richie to run.
Jonah and Micki struggle as Richie runs out into the hallway and hides. She finally gets free, runs out, throws the lantern to Richie, and tells him to toss it over the balustrade downstairs. When Jonah instinctively goes after it, Micki grabs his legs and sends him over the balustrade.
As Micki and Richie come downstairs, Jonah recovers and grabs the nearby lantern. He unshutters it and fires the beam at Micki. She grabs a mirror she was adjusting earlier and reflects the beam back into Jonah's face. He screams in terror and bursts into flame, then collapses as a charred husk.
The next day, Jack and Ryan come back. Ryan complains to Micki about how first the car broke down and when they finally repaired it and got to the convention, half of the people didn't show up because of the storm. All of the motels were booked solid so they had to sleep in the car. They ask what Micki ended up doing, and she says nothing happened and Richie was fine.
Jenny comes in and asks Micki not to tell Richie any "ghost stories" the next time she babysits her son. She says that Richie talked about how Jonah and Tom showed up and took them prisoner, and Micki just looks innocent and walks away as Jack and Ryan look at her and wonder.
