On William's first day at work the Fields find themselves without water, requiring Hester to communicate with a plumber in French. She also has trouble adjusting to the long French lunch hours and coping with an amorous baker. Then the plumber gets bitten by a rat, which leads to Hester interrupting William's first business meeting and a visit from the rat-catcher, who is also the marquis who owns most of the village.
