- After a man scorns his lover, he resorts to drastic measures to ensure that his family doesn't learn of their affair... but his plan hardly goes off without a hitch. Later, a man literally tries to cheat death.
- Paul is a successful attorney, and his son Jason (Morris Chesnutt) is a promising athlete, who's considering a number of colleges for scholarships. However, Paul has been cheating on his wife Helen with Claire, and now that he wants to break it off, the jealous and possessive Claire is threatening to expose the affair. She tries to leave a message on the answering machine, but Paul catches it and removes the tape. When Jason decides to stay in Springwood and take a full ride at the local college, Paul is upset and thinks he's wasting his talent just to stay close to home. He goes to see Claire to tell her it's over, but she threatens his family. After hearing that a mysterious woman was following Jason home from school, Paul has a vision of her running Jason over and ending his career. He begins to fear for their safety, and asks a former client of his to make arrangements to kill her.
Pretending to be sick so he can stay home from Jason's championship game, Paul visits Claire's apartment only to find the would-be hitman dead on her floor and Claire gone. He returns home much later, and bluffs his wife into thinking he's having business problems. She tells him that Jason's team lost the game and he'll be out late blowing off steam. Paul has a nightmare that Claire is in his house to tell Helen about the affair, and Helen shooting at them on the stairs. Helen goes downstairs to fix him some milk, only to be ambushed and beaten to death by Claire. Paul struggles with her, and eventually runs the back of her head into the coat rack, killing her. Jason comes home to find his mother and Claire both dead.
Flash forward 2 years: Paul has a serious heart attack. His care nurse informs him that Jason called and is coming home to care for his father. Paul flashes back to the night of Helen's murder, then has a nightmare of Jason coming home to kill him. The nurse gives Jason instructions for his care, and leaves them together. After some reminiscing, Jason goes to unpack when Paul notices track marks on his arm, which unduly stresses his heart.
Jason is unpacking his things, including his drug kit. He has a vision of his mother, who disapproves of his drug habit. Jason tells her he's not strong enough to stay clean, and she tells him not to use her death as an excuse, since she's never coming back. Later, Jason comes clean to Paul about his drug use, and Paul blames himself for letting the family down. He talks about his addiction to cheating, including the court case involving Claire, and showing Jason how he dealt from the bottom of the deck and made money at poker. Jason says he's been clean for 6 months. They agree to start over and rehire the nurse since he's going back to Springwood University, and the two apologize to each other and reconcile.
As soon as Jason leaves, Paul has a massive coronary that kills him. He awakes to find Claire in the room with him, and she informs him that evil souls are allowed to choose their eternal mates in the afterlife, and she's chosen him. They reminisce about the days Paul always won at strip poker, and Paul proposes a wager - one hand of poker to give him extra time to spend with his son. Claire agrees to let him live one more week if he wins. Paul cheats, beating her 3 aces with a full house, and she lets him live, but then takes Jason's life in exchange.
