Quotes

  • Xavier : [opening lines]  This can't be, look at those sleeves.

Carmen : That was all they had in that store. You have a difficult size.

Xavier : Ceremonial clothes, is what they call this. Admit, that suit vest would suit a magician better than to attend a prom with.

Carmen : Stick pins in it.

    Xavier : I'm not a fakir.

Carmen : 'Mirror, mirror on the wall... who's the prettiest one of all?'

Xavier : If you want to be in a good mood, you should never ask.

    Carmen : Oh please.

Xavier : I have to rent a suit and you buy something new. This isn't serious, is it?

Carmen : I'm curious what you'll think of my prom outfit.

    Xavier : Undressed.

    Carmen : Huh?

Xavier : Yeah, I think it all looks kind of undressed.

Carmen : This is to wear under my dress, and for after the prom. Xavier, I'm nervous with joy. It's been ten years since I last went to a prom.

    Xavier : Me too.

Carmen : To a prom with class, that is.

Xavier : They're not going to get me off the dance floor, you know.

Carmen : Just make sure you don't fall over your trouser legs. We'll stop at the cafe first, huh?

    Xavier : Why?

Carmen : To tell them you can't train tonight.

Xavier : Oscar already knows that, right?

Carmen : Pascale and company can admire me then. They'll be green with envy.

Xavier : Oh yeah? If you want to arrive at the prom first, we don't have time to lose.

    [she parades with her outfit]

Carmen : I want to be in the middle of the dance floor when everyone comes in.

Xavier : You spent a lot of money, didn't you?

Carmen : At such a prom everyone looks at the woman. And the man is known by the woman.

Xavier : The price tag is still attached.

    [he laughs]

    Carmen : Hands off.

Xavier : You can't go like that, can you?

Carmen : Everyone should know what it costs.

    Xavier : Sure, how much?

    Carmen : Except you.

    [he gets up]

    Carmen : Wow, you've shrunk, haven't you?

  • Pascale : Carmen's lucky to be able to go to a fancy prom, isn't she? Boma will be there, too. He knows many senior army officers.

Doortje : We used to go to Pico's school prom every year. That was nice, Pascale. He doesn't want to go anymore. The proceeds are misused, he says.

Oscar : Shall we throw a mussel party?

    [they're waving it off]

    Doortje : Mussel party...

Oscar : Okay, I'll keep my mouth shut, uh.

[Carmen enters in her prom outfit]

Carmen : Good evening, everyone. Port wine, Pascale.

[Carmen sits on bar stool, crosses her legs; Xavier enters in his large tuxedo]

Xavier : Is there anything to see?

    [general hilarity]

Oscar : Well, I thought you couldn't come and train?

    Xavier : Carmen wanted to...

Carmen : Xavier wanted to personally inform you that he's not coming to train. We have to go to the army prom tonight. We can't miss that, you know. Connect with generals and colonels. That could be very important for his career.

    Pascale : New dress?

    Carmen : Oh, this?

Doortje : You have to be the type for it, though. Look, the price is still attached.

Carmen : Really? *I didn't pay attention to that*.

    [she turns to Xavier]

Carmen : Couldn't you tell me?

    Doortje : 11,000. Yeah, that's it. 11,999 francs.

Xavier : [indignated]  That's enough too, isn't it?

Doortje : There isn't even a bit of dust on it yet.

Carmen : A bargain, you know.

Pico : Xavier, that a bargain, too?

Oscar : What, do you have to be a waiter there, Skavier?

[general hilarity; Carmen gets up but stumbles over her high heels]

Carmen : I won't be able to drink too much. I can already feel it. You know how that goes. Champagne at will. Are you ready, Xavier?

Xavier : Let me finish my pint first.

Carmen : No, we're in a hurry. The champagne awaits. Come on. Have fun, uh?

Pascale , Doortje : You too, uh.

Carmen : Give me a call tomorrow.

Pascale : Good luck with your dress.

    Carmen : Thanks. Bye.

Xavier : [in an exaggerated tone]  Yeah, *bye*!

    [he follows her]

Oscar : Skavier? Careful not to drop your platter, huh!

[general hilarity; Carmen grabs Xavier by the scruff of the neck and pulls him away; when they are gone, Pascale and Doortje watch them by the window]

Doortje : Do you really think that's a nice dress, Pascale?

Pascale : Sure. To sit behind a showcase, anyway.

Doortje : Guys, the *Rolls Royce* won't start.

[Oscar and the rest of the gang join Pascale and Doortje]

Pascale : Oh dear, it's going wrong. Oh, they're coming back.

[they all go back to their original spot as Carmen returns]

    Carmen : Dammit!

    Doortje : Something wrong, Carmen?

Carmen : Can someone come and push?

Pascale : Is there something wrong with your car?

Carmen : Please, we'll be late.

[she pauses, she looks at them, begging]

    Carmen : Come on!

    [she goes outside again]

Oscar : [ironically]  Patrick? André? *Come on!*

[his players get up to push the red Ford Capri]

  • Carmen : And, is he sodden?

Dimitri : Xavier? He still looks okay, doesn't he?

    [he laughs]

Carmen : I don't have time for your bullshit. What's wrong with it?

Xavier : [on his tuxedo pants]  The lining always comes off.

Dimitri : If you want I'll weld it for you, Xavier.

    [he laughs; she doesn't]

Dimitri : It's probably the head gasket. It costs a lot of money. And you guys find yourselves in a bit of a tight corner, isn't it?

Carmen : We have to go to a prom. Give me your handkerchief.

Dimitri : [laconically]  You're not going to cry, are you? If it's next week, you're still on time.

    [he laughs]

    Dimitri : Hey, my handkerchief.

Carmen : You must drive us there.

Dimitri : DDT Cars is not a taxi service. I can rent you a car, though.

    Carmen : How much?

Dimitri : One car's not enough?

Carmen : How much do you ask for it?

    Dimitri : 500 francs.

Carmen : Rent that car, Xavier.

Dimitri : 500 francs an hour, that is.

    Carmen : That's pure theft!

    Dimitri : Then no.

Carmen : Alright, I'll rent it. Which one is it?

[he walks to a light blue Ford Anglia oldtimer]

Dimitri : Voilà. I still have to fix the seat but I'll give you a 50 francs discount. I'll get a purchase receipt.

Carmen : Oh come on. Do you have to, really?

Xavier : Carmen. Those pants, they...

Carmen : Here - Shoot a staple in it.

    [she gives him a stapler]

Dimitri : Hey keep that stapler down 'cause -

[Xavier hurts himself with the stapler; Dimitri grins]

Carmen : Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear...
