When Sarah first enters at the beginning of the first part wearing the long old-fashioned gown, the Doctor calls her Vickie. He's referring to Victoria Waterfield who traveled with the Second Doctor (Patrick Troughton) and came from Victorian England. (However, the Second Doctor never called her Vickie.)
Voted by fans as the third greatest Doctor Who serial in Outpost Gallifrey's poll in 2003 to celebrate 40 years of the series.
Parts of this story were filmed at Stargrove Manor in East End, Hampshire, which belonged to Mick Jagger at the time.
This episode takes place in England in 1911.
The original script was by Lewis Greifer, who submitted a first draft which producer Philip Hinchcliffe and script editor Robert Holmes deemed couldn't be made to work within the format of the show. When Greifer proved unavailable to rewrite it himself, Holmes rewrote the script from page one. Greifer was paid in full for his first draft and retained copyright for the story, which is why the pseudonym of Stephen Harris was invented as author.
